Hi everyone. Even though I'm a newbie, I'd like to join the discussion, if I may. I'm a trainer for PetSmart and have 4 corgis: 3 Pembrokes and 1 Cardi mix. I adore my job and PetSmart has been very good about providing appropriate training. I came to my job with 5 years of experience.

Our classes are $99 (in my region) and are for 8 weeks. I work very hard to find dogs of similar size and temperament for my classes. And I don't allow off-leash play generally unless I have one of those really great groups of dogs that all get along and have a great time. I supervise ANY interaction very closely. I control my classroom. And I would be very concerned with ANY instructor who didn't follow that formula.

I must admit, though, even with my best intentions and supervision, accidents do happen. But when they do, I don't let the dog who has been frightened to leave on a negative interaction. I work with the parents, both in and outside of class, to desensitize the puppy to help them become more confident. Bad interactions can hurt a puppy for a long time so it's important for a trainer to be aware and in control.

I hope your little one has more positive interaction in class. If it continues, though, I wouldn't hesitate to ask to be transferred to another class. (Or have the more aggressive dog transferred out.) I have had dogs who are just too rambunctious to have in a group setting and I've moved them to private class until they are better able to handle a group.

Many PetSmart trainers are CPDT certified. PetSmart has an extensive training program of study in ethology and training methods. I came to the job with five years of previous training prior to applying for a trainer's position.
