New adopted puppy won't eat - 10-24-2007, 02:02 PM

I adopted Molly, my 5 month old Corgi about a week ago. She is adjusting well but she isn't eating. Since she has been with us she has eaten less then a half a cup of food. If anyone can give me suggestions on how to help get Molly to eat I would appreciate it

Have you called your vet? Do you mean 1/2 cup per day, or for the entire week?

She may not like her food but should get hungry enough to eat it anyway. Charlie didn't like the first two puppy food brands I bought, but he did eat. The third food brand he loves. You might need to add a little boiled minced chicken or cooked drained ground beef to her food and see if that interests her. If her tummy is upset you may just need to give her chicken and rice or beef and rice for a few days, and skip the kibble.

She also could have swallowed something and have a blockage.

Is she having diarrhea or vomiting? Does she seem playful or depressed?

Definitely a phone call to your vet ASAP is in order.

I agree with Chris and Charlie you should cal your vet. My puppy Nick is very finicky. He is 1 1/2 and he still sometimes needs coaxing to eat. We feed him what the breeder started him on but I find a little cottage cheese in his food makes the meal or as a meal all on its own is incredibly appetizing for him.

Matt

PS Do you have any photos of the little one gocorgi.com? I'd love to see a few shots of a five month old corgi!

Is she drinking? Is she playing? Are her urine and bowel movements normal? Are her gums pink and if you press on them do they refill quickly? Does she have a temp? (Normal is around 100 give or take a degree or so. 102 and up is a fever.)

Where did you get her?

And yes, is it a half cup a day or a half cup for the week?

If she's not drinking, not playing, urine and bowel movements are not normal, or she has a fever, etc. you should call your vet and have him check her out right away. Might not be a bad idea anyway.

If she's fine other than not eating then I'd not panic. Some dogs take awhile to adjust to a new home and you just need to wait them out. Although I will say it is quite unusual for a puppy to take this long.

If you think there is anything else abnormal along with the not eating get her to the vet for a check up right away.

Peggy

This has got to be serious. A half a cup of puppy food over one week is as close to starvation as a Corgi can get. A vet should be consulted post haste.
In the meantime try feeding Molly wuth some fresh cooked and small diced meat (beef or lamb) and add a little non-onion gravy to it. Don't give her any cow's milk but try her with some goat's milk - warmed to room temperature. She might respond to some carbo such as cooked rice, cooked potato or cooked pasta.

brie,

Please come back and give us an update on Molly. Have you been able to get her to eat?

This happened with sophie. What I did was take a hand full of food and I tossed them around. She chases them. Also Maybe she is just getting used to her new envirnment. She will start to eat. I had to which food twice. I still need to switch it.

Only god can judge me.

I hope everything is OK with your pup. If she is normal (per your vet), then perhaps you can try canned dog food. Or maybe she just needs more time to be comfortable in her new home.
