Well, I left Dudley in his crate all day while I was at work (took him out at lunch) and we had no accidents whatsoever. When I came home, I immediately took him outside and he went potty. Then, later on, he starting sniffing around the house, so I asked him if he had "to go potty" and he ran to the door, so I think we are making some progress. Hopefully it keeps up

well, apparently I spoke to soon. We are now back at square one as Dudley has not pooped in his crate and once again gotten it all over him and even managed to throw some out onto the floor somehow. Nothing like coming home from a long day at work to the wonderful smell of doggie doo Am I giving him too much room? I thought dogs wouldn't go in "their area." Also, Dudley will deficate at least four times, sometimes five a day. Is this alot? I feed him twice a day, only a small amount, and he gobbles it up as if he is starving. I feed nutromax puppy food at the recommendation on his breeder. What do you guys think?
Thanks for all the help and encouragement! You guys are great, especially during this frustrating time.

Jeni,

AT his young age, he really should be fed 3x a day - Michael will probably say
4 X. His crate should just be big enough for him to lay down, stand up
and turn around . Was that a typo in your thread and did you mean he pooped in his crate? It sounded like that is what you meant.

When I first got Cody at 3 months, he would poop sometimes 4 or 5 times
a day, but now, it is about 3 times.

You may have too much room in his crate for him.

When you say you are feeding him twice a day and only a small amount -
exactly how much are you giving him at each feeding?

Okay, so I have made it so his crate is smaller, hopefully this will work for the popping in his crate problem. As far as the food goes, I feed him about 3/4 of a cup in the morning and 3/4 after I get home from work. When should I fit in the third feeding? and if he already is going in his crate, won't feeding him when I come home to let him out at lunch only make this worse? I don't want to malnourish him in anyway; however, I don't see how feeding him that many times is feasible under the current situation. What if I fed him right after I got home from work (at 4p.m.) and then again at 6 or 7? I do only have eleven school days left before I am off for the summer and at that time I can definitely make sure he is getting his 3-4 meals a days but what now?

I was told by my breeder to do 4 times a day and to give 1/2 cup each time do 2 cups a day until he is bigger and not growing so fast. I feed him for the last time about 8 and water is up between 8:30 and 9 with our last time out at about 10:30 or 11. I am doing 7, 12 or 1, then 5or 6, then 8. I am not sure that it helps or that it is right but wanted to let you know.

Jeni D.

I forgot that you do work and you are right, feeding him at the lunch hour
will make him want to go poop - not sure what you should do there.

As you said, only 11 days left and then you are home so you could change
his schedule for the summer and feed him more frequently

my dog is 6 months old and he is fed at 6 a.m. noon, and then around 6 to 7
at night - with a couple of treats in between, but I am here, so much easier.

If you made the crate smaller that should help with the pooping - and did you
clean it out really well with a good cleaner to get rid of any smell?

Thanks for the help guys. I cleaned that crate until it sparkled like the Taj Mahal There is definitely no signs of any smell (mostly because I can't stand to have the house smell like that and I don't won't him to waller in poo everyday). Hopefully we'll have better luck today

Jeni,

I am also curious as to when you feed Dudley his breakfast? Is it first thing
when you get up, before you shower, etc. or are you doing it right before you leave for the day?

I don't know what time you get up in the morning, but was thinking that if
you could feed him immediately upon waking, he would probably have to go
poop right before you leave for work - Does he also go during the lunch
house when you come home to let him out?

We feed him right when we wake up. About 6:30 give or take some time. He normally does go poop right when we take him out for the first time (before feeding) and then again at 7:15 or so. Sometimes he will go when I come home for lunch, these are the days that he doesn't go in his crate, but other days he doesn't poop outside at lunch and then I get a big surprise when I come home from work at the end of the day.

Jeni D.

I can imagine that you would have a big surprise on days when he does not
poop during the lunch hour - that would be a long time for him to hold it, from
when he does it in the morning, until when you get home.

How long at the lunch hour, do you stay outside with him? I know you said
you are a teacher(I think) , do you get at least an hour lunch? Sometimes
it seems that my Cody will pee twice and then we walk around a bit, sometimes it is like 5 or 10 minutes (after he pees) and then he will start circling around and sniffing and then he will poop. Any maybe in your case
when you let him out at lunch and he just pees, bring him back in and then
20 minutes later try again outside and see if he poops,

I know your school days are coming to an end and it will be much easier on
you and him to establish a schedule that will work for both of you. By the time
you go back to school again in the fall, I would think he would have established a whole new routine.

Linda,
Funny you should recommend trying to take him out twice because I actually tried that before I read your email. I took him out once as soon as I got home for lunch and he only urinated, so I tried again 10 minutes later and he pooped...when I got home I had no "surprises." So, I will try this method from now on and hopefully we will see some great improvements. He has gotten much better about not going in the house though so at least that is a step forward. Thanks for all your help and I'm sure I'll need alot more as we go

That is such good news for you! Sometimes they will only pee after "lounging"or sleeping in their crate and then once they start walking around and probably from the excitement of seeing you, he needs to do his other "duty" maybe 20 minutes after that - so hopefully this will continue until you get off for the summer and then you will have more time to work with him. Good luck.
