Hi. Does he have a crate? If so, you can try this . . .
when he comes back inside without going potty, put him in his crate for about 15 minutes or so (not as punishment, just so he won't go on the floor). Then take him right back outside and give him another chance to go out there. If he does, make a BIIIIIG deal of it. Give treats, praise, etc. If not, repeat the steps above. Doing this sets him up for success. He won't go in his crate, so you don't hae to worry about putting him in there. And when he does eventually go outside, you can reward him and let him know he has done the right thing. So you keep him from going in the wrong place, and teach him where the right place is. As far as the tracking in poop, not sure what you can do about that if you are not home to pick it up right away. Maybe you could try a smaller area of paper, so that he gets used to having two separate areas . . . . one for play and one for potty. Since his entire area is papered, he may not think of them as separate activities right now. (just my theory, but worth a shot) Hang in there, it takes time. |

We've made it three days without any accidents! And we were even at my mother's house over the weekend. He's been running to the door and sitting when he needs to go out, and incidentally, has gotten both the sit and stay commands (even when I don't have a treat). He's a pretty smart little guy and definitely aims to please.
Just wanted to share my super news and thank all of you for the great advice. |

Well, two steps forward and one step back
We now have no problems with him going to the bathroom in the house, but he does pee in his crate. I think he has been doing this all along I just never noticed because of the much more nasty poo. I thought dogs weren't suppose to go where they had to sleep! It definitely cannot be because he has too much room because I only give him enough space to barely turn around. I don't understand how he can hold it inside and all through the night, but can not hold it in his crate. Silly dog. What can I do to try and stop this? (As a side note, I've never been on a website where I talked so much about bathroom habits )

Hi Jeni. Pockets to was peeing in his crate still. He has not done it in about a week until yesterday. They don't like to do it as I am sure you will be told but sometimes it happens. I am not sure why. Yesterday I was gone for 1 1/2 hours when he peed in there. But we had over a week of no pee. I think it just them growing up!

Jeni,
Okay, no water bowl in his crate - I guess I am stumped. It must be just too long for his little bladder to hold it from the time you leave in the morning until you get home for lunch. I know you said he does sleep through the night in it without peeing. I am assuming he eats breakfast and then drinks water in the morning and you probably let him out before you go to work. If that is the case, obviously, the water has not worked itself through and therefore he just can't hold it. Isn't your teaching coming to an end soon? For the summer? He is how old right now? linda |

He's almost 12 weeks old. I only have four days of school left so I will just worry about it then
Actually, he made it through today without peeing in his crate at all, so maybe his bladder is getting better. Who knows Silly puppies!
