retained upper canines? - 02-16-2008, 11:30 AM

This is a new one for me. Tucker has shed most of his front baby teeth except for his upper canines. His adult canines have come in on the top and bottom. The baby canines are just behind the adult ones and they are not the least bit loose. Tucker also has an overshot that we are watching to see if the lower adult canines cause any problems with the roof of his mouth. So far, so good with the lower canines but what about the retained baby teeth? He will be 6 months on Feb 22 and has an appt on March 14 for neutering.
Anyone else experience this?

Westin still has ONE upper canine that is extremely loose, but he just can't shake it. But he kept his puppy teeth for a little while while all of his adult teeth grew in, the only ones that came out right away were his lower canines (the first that he lost!) I think at this point though, if Tucker's aren't even loose, probably ask your vet if you need to come in before his neuter to get them looked at, or ask if he can wait until the surgery.

Charlie had base narrow canines, and I'm still trying to determine if we can avoid expensive orthodontic treatment. Use the Search tab here and look up "base narrow canines" for Charlie's retained baby teeth story and photos.

I would highly recommend having the retained baby teeth pulled as soon as possible, so you can minimize the chance of expensive dental work later. (My vet told me it would be ok to wait over the phone, then when I had them pulled they said they should have pulled the teeth sooner and his teeth might not end up in the right place.) I'd probably move the neutering up sooner so they only put him under anesthesia once.

I agree with Chris. At his age those puppy canines need to come out. I'd have the puppy canines pulled.

Thanks for all the good advice!
When I made the appointment for neutering, I asked about the baby teeth. They said that they would pull them when he was anaesthacized for the neuter, if they were still there. I asked for a Friday surgical appt. so that I can be home on Saturday and Sunday to watch him and keep him quiet. The next available spot for surgery was on Friday March 14th. They said that Feb 22, 29, March 1 and 7th were all filled.
I will call back on Monday and ask again.
Thanks!
