The only places I know of around here where our pet dogs are welcome is
pet stores only, and if they are a service dog, they are welcome anywhere,
but we could not bring our dogs into a shopping mall, our city parks don't
even allow them.

The story about the drunken woman is quite strange.

Linda - very strange. But it's typical of a vast number of people here who want to put down dogs for all kinds of flimsy reasons and not instead mete out strong punishment to the owners/handlers of the dogs

I think I've said it before on Go Corgi, but there are a host of first world and second world countries which allow any well behaved dog onto public transport and into cafes and restaurants. Here in NZ there are laws prohibiting dogs from being around food outlets such as food stores and restaurants etc But for what reason??? For instance, Taylor is not going to jump up and sample any food thats on sale or on a table. He's not going to wee on a bag of potatoes or on the floor of a cafe

Michael,

I am not sure how much it would bother me to see a dog in a restaurant. Remember, there are many people out there who are not animal lovers and would highly protest sitting and eating their meal at a table ,only to look over and see a dog at the next table panting with his tongue hanging out.Can you imagine sitting in a restaurant and people bringing in their dogs and expecting them to all be quiet, not bark and to hopefully not have a potty accident - talk about ruining your appetite.

Your Taylor may not jump up to steal food off the table, but the big lab that may be sitting at the table next to you might think your steak looks pretty good. And think about the time when a dog would be shedding hair and how it sometimes seems to float to places we least expect, like maybe into someones mashed potatoes. Also, the possibility of people bringing in their dogs with fleas - hardly a place for a restaurant serving food to people.

Now if they came up with a "dog Friendly" restaurant that dog owners could patronize, that would be fine, but to expect that all restaurants cater to our canines and to expect other people to accept this just isn't going to happen.

I do love animals, but I don't agree with being able to bring them into restaurants and besides, the health dept would go nuts. I could not open a catering business out of my home, even if I did not have pets, without my kitchen being in a totally seperate area apart from our living quarters. There would be many state codes I would have to pass, inspections, etc.

Linda

- just yesterday I asked the AKC for some rather simple info and they wanted me to pay US$60 for it. The NZ Kennel Club would charge nothing to give out this kind of info.
Many of the publications that AKC charges for if you order online are available free at shows. Of course that doesn't help you. But most of the rules and regulations books are available online and downloadable as .pdf files you can print out. No charge, at least yet although there is very little I'm putting past AKC today.

LInda- I'm talking about well behaved dogs not Labs who might grab a steak off a plate on a table. Anyway Government agencies, such as the health dept wouldn't be involved because the laws would allow for dogs around food outlets. As I said there are first world countries and second world countries - some of them more sophisticated than either NZ or USA - that allow these things - and you don't get to hear of any problems. Food for thought, eh.

Michael,

Okay, so well behaved dogs? - I guess then you would have to have a
"bouncer" at the entrance of each restaurant checking each dog Patron
for their behavior, and that person would also have to wear gloves and check the dog for fleas, and then could decide if they could come in or not??

Remember Michael, you know your Taylor and he is well behaved and well cared for, but to suggest that everyone should just be able to bring in their dog is assuming that all people are going to use their better judgement and only bring in well behaved ,clean, uninfested animals.

Now would it be required that the dogs would have to be fed at home
prior to entering the restaurant or would they have their own doggie
buffet bar?

PS. How did this thread veer off to this, wasn't this initially about
spots on carpets?

Linda

Linda - yes, this is not what started this thread. It's like whispering a message to someone and that someone passes it on in message form and so on - and the end result is a completetly different message coming back to the originator. But I think you miss the point. The point is some countries allow dogs into these places and on public transport and my Taylor and hundreds of thousands of dogs in the USA could successfully do the same without the creation of any problems. It can be done because there are living proofs of it elsewhere. There are well ordered cities in the world where you can take your dog shopping and on all kinds of holidays.

LInda - In giving me a hard time,at least you didn't say that there was a "cultural" difference between my views and some other countries on one hand, and the USA on the other.

Well I went and bought a spot bot and I love it. Each tank does about 3 spots for set in stains in case anyone is interested. You do put it on and walk away. There is nothing for you to do except turn it on. There are also attachments to do furniture as well. Just thought I would let everyone know. Oh and it is by Bissel and was about $130 in case anyone was wondering. It is brand new soI am sure price will go down but since my nephew and puppy are potty training I wasn't waiting!
