We have our Cardigan! - 05-09-2006, 05:52 PM

We got our puppy, Biscuit, Thursday night. He is adorable. I have some questions. I know it can be dangerous for a corgi to fall and so we didn't want him to go on the couch but he kept trying to jump up and cried so we let him sit there with us. Do I need to watch him constantly so he won't try to jump down on his own? He goes down one step fine.
Also, the potty training is not going well. He hasn't been going in his crate but he goes anywhere else in the house it seems. We take him out after meals and when he gets out of his crate and several other times in the day. He seems to go in the house right after we have come back in from being outside. We give him a treat whenever he goes potty outside. He is 9 weeks old.

What a little cutey! We just got out puppy, Dudley, a week ago (my avatar shows a picture of him at 6 weeks; I really need to get it updated). He's now 10 weeks old. Seems like we'll be going through alot of the same issues around the same time We're having some problems with potty training as well (so I can't really help you there) and I'm sure you'll soon get lots of information from their very knowledgeable corgi owners on this site

Hi Liz.
Congrats on the new addition to your household.
Corgi puppies up til they are six months old should not be stair climbing up and down let alone springing off a couch - especially at the younger end of the scale of which Biscuit is at present. So it is better to train him from now not to get up on the furniture. Anyway, this aspect might be what you want in the future ie not have a hairy Corgi up on your couches, chairs and beds. If he wants to get up, pick him up and place him on your lap or with his head resting on your shoulder.
Toilet training is a bit of a hit or miss thing for a short while. But timing is everything. Don''t expect him to toilet straight after each meal but SOON after each meal and any liquid drink (water, cereal). Straight after any short sharp or vigourous or lengthy play inside, take him out for a toilet. Straight after any prolonged nap - outside after a very short burst of welcome and cuddles. When a eight weeks to four months old Corgi gets excited or very anxious(frightened) they may very well want to urinate. So watch out for these occasions. In the meantime confine him mostly to areas which are not carpeted and spread out newspaper in a section of these areas and he might get the drift in a day or two that if he has to go inside it's on the newspaper

We live in a one story ranch so we don't really have stairs to worry about. The living room has a step down. It is very small, 5 1/2 inches. We also have 2 steps to our backyard. I knew that corgis puppies can't do steps so we got a piece of plywood to make a ramp out to the yard for him. I didn't even think about the living room step until he was home and went into the room. I was worried but he had no problem. He goes up and down that fine. He uses the ramp outside. When I put him on the couch he usually snuggles next to me and falls asleep. Then I just worry about him waking and trying to get down so I stay with him.
I read some of the other posts about potty training and will try some of those ideas. Luckily we don't have carpet. I just don't want to start a bad habit that is hard to break with the potty issues.

You're lucky if you don't have a climate that makes carpet necessary. That save an awful lot and you can do great things to floors minus wall-to-wall carpet. I got my Taylor at 13 weeks and he had virtually the run of the house from day one and was completely non house trained. But he only ever toileted inside twice - and both times he raced into what I call my utility room - a kind of office/computer/exercycle/ play room at one end of the house and did nice hard poops that were so easy to uplift and left no mark behind.

Congrats on your new puppy, He's just precious.

What color is he? How looks kind of blonde/fawn in the pictures.

Liz asked this question and I would also like to know. Maybe there are a lot more of us out here that haven't got a clue.

Look at the top of the page and there is a button User CP click on this and it will take you to another page, in this page there should be a menu on the left side of the page, in this menu there should be a button Avatar or something like that mine says edit Avatar, because I beleive, I have already made one Avatar. On this page you can set your Avatar preferences and upload a picture from your computer to use as your Avatar. Hope this is helpful.

Liz, your little Biscuit is ADORABLE!!!!! I have never seen a cardi that color. Congrats on bringing your baby home, and don't worry about the potty training . . . it takes time. Just keep following all of the good advice you get here, and you will be a-ok. In the meantime, patience is the key.

Fluffypants,

She most certainly does look like a princess - does she have a castle to
match? She is just too darn cute - that is just one thing between the females and the males, the females just have so many more of those
neat clothes, hats and feather things to dress them up with - ha
