New Corgi Pup "Scoots"... is this normal? -
04-03-2008, 03:23 PM
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, and a proud new Corgi Owner! I just got my pup yesterday and he just turned 6 weeks old, he is an absolute LOVE and cuter than any animal I've ever seen!
Anyway, I have a couple of questions, I know that Pem. Corgis aren't suposed to have tails, but his was cropped before I got him, which I read is normal, but it's so stinkin short... there's almost nothing there. Does it hurt him? I mean when the Vet chops it? It's so close... just curious.
Now, He is still itty bitty and learning how to get around, he's spent most of his life with his breeder in a small 4' by 4' or so puppy pen, so he is just learning to run, scratch, jump and romp (it's so cute). But when he sits (on our hardwood floor, or our cement porch, and he props up to a sitting position, his butt scoots backward... and he does it every time he sits... is it just a traction problem? Or is he trying to itch his rear? he doesn't drag it like I've had other dogs do, but does anyone elses pup do this?

Hi rme147,
Breeders normally dock Corgi pups tails around 3 days of age. Their tail is so tiny at that point, that it's hard to imagine that they would feel more than a little pinch. His "lack of tail" should not be painful.
Sounds like he is sitting ok. When you talk about seeing other dogs drag around on their rear...that's usually a sign of tapeworm or hookworm.
Welcome! Enjoy the forums.

I agree with my Pem Charlie, I doubt they feel much pain when their tails are done. Not an expert here, but IMO it seems having the dew claws done would be more painful than the tail.

Is he sliding his butt back when he sits or dragging it, as in moving forward while in a sitting position?

All the Corgis I have ever owned had their tails docked through the band method which is painless and only a little uncomfortable. More Pem breeders in the USA need to learn the rudiments of banding their Corgi pups - saves money too.

The majority of Pem breeders in the US do use the banding method.
The scooting issue sounds more like a traction and coordination thing, especially considering his age, rather than anything having to do with the tail docking. I've seen 5-6 week old Cardigan puppies do the same thing when they sit on linoleum, tile or other slick surfaces and they do have their tails.
And for the record, vets do not "chop" off the tails when they dock - cropping is done on ears.

The standard says "as short as possible without being indented". That means they are not susposed to have any tail. So yes, it's normal and correct to be so short.
They are docked between 1 and 3 days old. So he should have been docked before you got him.

It's just the way some puppies sit. Not a corgi thing, just something that some puppies do.

rme147, I sent you a private message a few days ago. Since you did not respond I wondered if you had seen it? Look for private message near the top of the page when you are on the HOME PAGE. I am not looking for a response so much as to let you know that is an option that comes in handy from time to time. When I was first on I didn't know there was such a thing, and didn't answer other's messages.
(I posted on this thread because the message has to do with the discussion. )
