Here is an interesting response from Canidae regarding complaints about the new formulas. I notice the response was posted to the consumer affairs complaints website, but not published on their own homepage.

Without being able to check into my archives since I'm at work, it seems to me Diamond was at least in part responsible for distribution of the tainted food that caused such a ruckus about a year ago and now Canidae wants to use their manufacturing facilities for their new forumla? I fail to see their logic.

I especially loved the comment about one of the reasons for the smaller bags was it would make handling easier for the consumer! I find the "we did for you!" attempt to be too funny!

I wish I could remember what forum I saw this on, but I can't. When Canidae changed to Diamond, I saw one comment implying the manufacturer of the old formula may have been unwilling to produce the new more grainy formulas. I just checked The Pet Food List. Pet Food brands, manufacturers, products, ingredients, sources, cat, dog, food. to see if I could find the name of the old manufacturer, but the site was updated in Sept and shows Diamond. I don't know if there was any truth to the speculation about the manufacturer not wanting to produce Canidae's new food, but I found the comment interesting.

EDIT:

On the second reading, I see they aren't specifying who the "easier handling" was for...them or us, but I'm still mad at them so my interpretation is they mean for me.

Maybe we should send them a thank you note.

I think they were independent...manufacturing in their own plant(s) but I'm not sure. Run a quick search on "canidae switch to diamond". It pulls up a lot of user forums suggesting that they used to control their own manufacturing, then outsourced to Diamond to meet consumer demand. We can hope they have their own quality-control staff overseeing production at the Diamond plant.

I'm not sure either. I've never seen or been able to find anything definitive. Most info seems to point in the direction of Pied Piper making the old formula dry and Evangers (for sure, was one) producing the canned. I have an old Canidae booklet, can't find the date, but it was when the original Lamb & Rice first came on the market. It doesn't mention Canidae having their own manufacturing facility. I would think they would brag on their own facility if they had one...just my guess, though.

It doesn't matter to me, I'm not going to be using any more of their foods. Pip does love their Lamb & Rice Snap Biscuits. I'm still thinking about that.
