I am thinking about getting Chip a playmate. His breeder will be having another litter of pups ready to go in the fall and I would love for Chip to have a playmate as he really doesn't have another dog to play with as he needs to play. Also, not sure for a male or female. I have heard that females are more aggressive towards the males and Chip is laid back and not a scrapper. Also have heard that 2 males neutered young as they both would be get along well. Also, am wondering if Chip would get so close to the other puppy that he wouldn't be close to us. I have awhile to think about it but to me it is a big decision.

I have to say I am very glad that we got another corgi. They are so fun to watch them play together.
It was recomended to me to get a male / female = less fighting. But we have some members that have 2 females that are doing well together.
So far they are both bonding to each other as well as bonding to us.
No problems and no regrets.

Bonnie,

The main question to ask yourselves is do *YOU* want a second dog? Chip looks to you as his pack so from his perspective, well I don't think he is lying in his crate night wishing he had another dog to play with. That's something we project on them.

Having said that, corgis do work well in pairs and you get double the entertainment. Chip would do well with a "sibling." Male or female? I think either one would be fine. If you get a girl, just kind of accept now she'll be the "boss." By boss I don't mean she'll be aggressive or scrappy. The bonding issue, Chip will be old enough and already secure in his place in the family. Generally two puppies bonding to each other instead of with the humans is in cases where people get littermates or add a second puppy within a couple of months of getting a first one.

You'll be great with a second corgi, if you decide to go that way.

Debbie

Hi! I think it's most important to get an idea of the corgi's personality that you are adding. I had the most laid back baby of a male corgi you've ever seen. Now keep in mind he used to be a breeding dog, then he was neutered and I adopted him at 3 years old. I had always heard that a girl and boy were virtually perfect together. That was not the case! My laid back guy turned into Godzilla when the new girl tried to run his program. I mean scary to the vet kind of Godzilla. She would submit and he wouldn't stop going after her. I think you just need to be careful what type of personality you bring to the home in a new corgi and read as much as possible about making sure they know the structure of the household.

I say go for it - IF, as Debbie said, you want another Corgi. I loved having two, one of each, and yes, Riley the female was the boss of Rupert. I am now in the process of finding another female pup for us - there's too big a hole in our lives without two.

I would love to have another corgi pup and I had placed my order for a mild mannered, docile female as Chip is on the bossy side and thinks he is "top" dog. Well along came little orphan Maybelle that we found in a field and she filled the spot for the corgi pup. It has worked out very well I might add because Maybelle is on the shy side and has bonded very well with Chip. She has grown to almost 3 times Chip's height but still lets him be boss. They play very well together, eat together and share most things. She even lets Chip take toys, rawhide bones, etc away from her. They eat out of the same dish most of the time and she is protective of him. Actually turned out to be a great match.

Being a very active member of Go Corgi makes one very very vunerable to wanting Corgi pups/more Corgis. So one has to think very carefully that it is not just the hype that is fuelling all this desire. I really do believe Go Corgi promotes desires for Corgis - as it should. It is just that once you have the thing you want, do you really need more -and so soon.

Anyway, Deb has gone very nicely over the subject of Corgi compatability previously and I certainly have added my bit. The bottom line is that an awful lot depends on the individual temperament of the Corgis in question and the way the owner and family handle the new situation. So male - female or female-female or male-male or fixed, unfixed can be anything. I have owned two un-neutered male Pems at the same time, and I have had un-neutered Pems together for lengthy periods and no problems whatever. But I would say that male-female is more often a less challenging combination as a twosome in a household.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement!

Although you can't blame the website entirely. Corgis are like potato chips, or tattoos, as soon as you get one . . . you want another!
