Toys and Treats

Any recommendations on what kind of toys and treats I should get Gizmo and Matti? Before I picked them up I got them a rope toy, a puppy kong, a couple of pigs ears (which I have stopped using since it may be the cause of their loose stool) and some kind of chew rod thing.

But now that I am playing with them individually, I think I should stock up on some more toys so that they have something to do when they are caged up (besides whine for attention). I'm not sure how they'd react to some kind of squeek toy or if I should just get another rope toy. The rope toy seems to be their favorite, but I need to keep that around when I am playing with them so that I have something as a distraction to give them when they start chewing the blankets or something else. I would like to give them some vareity, so when they get bored with one toy they have something else to play with.

The puppy kong was not a huge hit. I put one of the bacon treats that they like inside (which are also not a big hit) but they get bored with it very quickly.

As for treats, are there any kind of treats that people would recommend above others? I got some of the "bacon like" strips but they don't seem wild about them. I want something that they really like so that I can reward them when they go to the bathroom outside, come to me, etc. I already praise and pet them like crazy when they do but I figured some treats would make it even more of a reward.

Try putting PLAIN yogurt in your puppy kong and then freeze it - my dog
has liked that and it keeps them busy - there are "talking" balls, treat dispensing balls and balls that make other silly noises when pushed - you just have to make sure that when you leave them alone in a room that they don't have a toy they could chew off and swallow(I am sure you know that already) Any kind of latex or rubber toy will have to be inspected regularly so they are still safe - do they seem to be like big chewers?

I also give freeze dried lamb liver because my dog has some type of food allergy, but you can also get freeze dried beef liver - I stuff it into those treat dispensing balls - some large pieces and some very small and it keeps him busy because he loves the liver smell and the taste. - now they are just 8 weeks old, so maybe someone else can chime in to let you know if it is okay to give liver at their age

Are the tummy problems better?

Try putting the kong with the frozen yogurt in their crates and it will occupy them for a bit or the treat dispencing balls - don't make the teats real small so they fall out super easy, they need to work for them a bit, otherwise, they will gobble them up way too quickly.

There is also a thing called the Chilly Bone - it is shaped like a bone, but
made of durable canvas like fabric and stuffed with a cloth filler. You run it under water to get it wet and then freeze it in a plastic bag for about an hour - that may occupy them also. - I have seen this at PetsMart and I have one for my dog also.

Mazie loves to play with balls - I can roll them around the kitchen floor for hours with her (plus it helps to tire her out too). Playing with a tennis or basketball outside is one of her favorite things to do now.

As for treats, Mazie wasn't too keen on hard treats right away, so my husband and I would give her liver treats. During puppy school, that was her motivation.

Like Linda states, the frozen yogurt in the Kong is also a fav...and it does keep her occupied for a good time.

Linda & Lisa gave great ideas. All of those things are huge hits with Jackie.

She also likes anything that squeaks, grunts, crinkles, talks, or makes any noise whatsoever. The thing that's great about noisy toys is they are self-motivating. The puppies will work at the toy to get it to make the noise . . . and when it does, it's like a reward for them.

Do they have any stuffed animals? Those are Jackie's favorites! You just have to check them every day to make sure that nothing is loose, and no stuffing is coming out. Good luck.
