Unhappy some spots on her back - 08-08-2006, 08:00 PM

Lizzy has a few spots on her back (hip area). They are kind of scab like. They are very tender for her. If you touch them she yelps a little. And she is very protective of them. My mother dog (Penny, also a Corgi) has some too. Penny had them last month after she got groomed, but Lizzy did not. This time Lizzy and Penny have them. I thought it could be a reaction to the shampoo they use. I don't think it looks like ringworm. Lizzy is acting like her normal self, but Penny gets a little mopey at times and does not eat very good. Has anyone had anything like this before?

You say that Lizzy is acting like her normal self, yet her spots seem tender to her and she yelps a bit and Penny seems a bit mopey and not wanting to eat.

I would definitely have your vet take a look at them.

The scabby spots are likely to be dermatitis or eczema. And the cause could very well be the shampoo you used. What I would do is buy a little 100 percent aloe vera and apply some of that to the affected area. If that doesn't help sufficiently over a day or two, then it is to the vet I would go. You have got to be discerning with dog shampoos.

I would be concerned with the not eating as much and mopeyness. To the vet's I would go also. Also, dermatitis & exzema aren't painful. Did you take her to the same groomer as you usually do?

It's always worth having a vet take a look. The sooner you go - usually the easier something is to treat on the dog and your wallet. Hope Lizzy is okay.

Chips mom

I thought the same thing; dermatitis and eczema aren't painful that I am aware of, just itchy at times; so if she is very sensitive to your touching it and yelps a bit, that seems strange to me and I would have a vet look at it.

Another voice echoing a vet check out would be a good idea. The mopeyness and not eating may or may not be related to the skin problems, but either way it is much better to err on the side of caution and have her looked at.

I have eczema, and I can tell you that it is VERY itchy!!!

So . . . even if it IS that, I would them to the vet ASAP! They are clearly uncomfortable.

You are right Jessica

Itching is not good for human or dog - to the vet.

Thanks for all the input. I think I will bathe her myself at the end of this month and see if she breaks out again. I am thinking that it may be an allergic reaction to the shampoo the groomer uses. My mother is going to take her dog to the groomer to show her the spots. but, of course she is on vacation this week so it will have to be next week. My mother has gotten her dog groomed for almost 1year going once a month and have just started this last month, so that is why I am leaning toward the fact that allergic reaction can take time to develop, just like people.

Thanks again for your help.

What about your one dog being mopey and not eating so well?

One wonders if an allergic reaction would cause discomfort upon touching and scabbing unless the area was itched quite abit. Has the areas healed? Anyway, the vet can prescribe special shampoo to ease this condition.
