I walk Chip down a walking trail by the river some and it is about 8/10 of a mile total. The first half of the walk, I do loose lead and we practice leave it. There are geese and ducks there and Chip wants to sample goose poop - yuk then the last half of the walk, we practice heel and our sit stay. When Chip is on loose lead, I let him go in front of me or to either side of me whatever he prefers as long as he doesn't pull on the leash. After reading everyone's posts, I am not sure if this is good or not but we enjoy our walk so I guess it is ok.
