Good question, I would like to know the answer as well. Koda is 4 months old and his coat is getting lighter and more coarse (I am guessing he is growing his big boy guard hairs) and he is really starting to develop the feathering on the back of his hind legs and on his chest like you see on the big dogs.

I have no exact number for how their full coat is developed or when. I just know when Milo was a puppy at 2 months, his coat was more rough and lighter color. Now at 8 months old, his coat is more luscious and shiny. The color has changed to a deep red which is healthy and shiny. I think around 6 months you can definitely see the full coat.

Emma had her adult coat by 1 year - till then her undercoat wasnt fully in. Chloe is 9 mts on 25th and her coat iis getting fulller and her "pantiloons" are comming in so I'm thinking she should have her adult coat about 1 year too. I don't know if this is the norm or not.

At eight months, Trevor's coat continues to change. When we got him (at age five months) he was listed as a sable, although his coat was for the most part medium to light red. About a month ago, he started developing his sable-tipped "cap" on the top of his head, and he has also developed some nice black highlights around the outside edges of his ears. His coat is now heavier, and what I would describe as a medium to deep red. It will be interesting to see if he develops much of an undercoat as the weather cools (we are, after all, living in a relatively warm climate.) I guess, if the other posts are any indication, we should see the final product when he reaches about one year of age.

At around 4 months adult hair starts coming in, by 7-8 months they have more "pants" and ruff. We still call this a puppy coat, because they keep this plusher, more poufy and softer coat until their first really big shed (usually after they turn a year old), then the next coat that comes in is totally adult and will not be quite the same as that more plushy sort of coat they had in the latter stages of puppyhood.

I remember having the first year of mild shedding. I kept thinking: what's all the hubub about? Then after about a year the shedding started. And it hasn't stopped! But still not tufting! I was really looking forward to pulling tufts!
Tucker's breeder told me he would lose his dark face, that his face would eventually turn red. So far he's kept the mask. Susan
