Chip's crate is right in front of the sofa by the coffee table and Chip lays on top of it alot. Sometimes, when I am sitting there, I notice he is staring at me and I find myself staring back at him. We just look into each others eyes. (the window to your soul so to speak) As there has been discussion on looking into a pup's eyes, I wonder if anyone else does this. Sometimes, I reach over and pick him up and love on him and sometimes he just goes to sleep. Does anyone else ever do this.

Bonnie,
Emma has the most expressive eyes... I can tell when she's happy or not - most of the time she is smiling. She isn't too big on sitting on my lap or being a snuggler. She likes to lay on the floor between my chair and footstool or if Chloe is pestering her she goes behind my chair. When Hubby is home she likes to lay in front of him so he can run his foot back and forth over her back forever... Chloe on the other hand likes to stretch out on my legs (her butt towards me and her head laying on my ankles) or if I'm on the sofa or bed she is curled up against the back of my legs. She is my snuggle puppy...

Yep, I've done that. Now there is a big difference in meeting eyes, holding a shared look for a moment or two and locking eyes and holding a stare down. The latter will either turn into the challenge being met and a charge or the dog becoming uncomfortable and looking away. As an aside, I've had a couple of fosters with severe dominance issues that making eye contact with was something to avoid. Knowing your dog and its temperament well can be a determining factor in how much contact is comfortable for both parties.
