Artos - what a great job you've done. Our very own Go Corgi analyst.

One thing is that some members have produced incorrect measurements (height and length) in measuring from or to the wrong place.
However, Taylor is three years old and currently weighs in at just over 25 lbs (11.4 kg).

Debbie seems estatic that Taylor is an inch (actually, less than an inch) over the so called height standard, but in all the years I have been to conformation shows under many local and foreign judges, and many of them specialist Corgi judges, and been around Corgi conformation showing people and breeders, not one judge has ever measured a Corgi nor have I ever heard of such a thing having occurred. Anyway, as I have so often said, Corgis are getting bigger - longer, higher and more weighty so the standard to a certain extent in this regard is, quiite rightly, largely iignored. The Best of Breed Pembroke at the NZ national show was all of 35 lbs (my estimation only) - and the judge was a foreigner and world rated. I would not wish to have a male Pembroke at 10 inches in height - yet again, that height falls within the so called standard.

Is this the correct way of measuring a dog?
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...suringadog.jpg

If so- everyone can do it and correct the figures in the chart above....

Very interesting replies from everyone. Here are Penny's stats:

6.5 months old
18 lbs (8.2 kg)
~15 in long (38.1 cm)
~11 in high (27.9 cm)

When I took out the tape measurer, she got a little wiggly like Bonnie’s Chip did. A little treat bribe helped.

Artos,

Just wanted to add a correction that Cody is 26 1/2 pounds at 11 months; you had put it in as 20 1/2

Thanks.

I also need to post a correction- DIllon's weight as of yesterday is 30.7 lbs and per the vet who is also a corgi breeder and handles many show corgis as part of her business, felt that he was on the lean side but was better kept in that condition as it is better on their backs to be on the lean side...

Shelly, my Ponzo is 9mths old and he just weighed in at 20 lbs. However, he is starting to look a little paunchy to us! I think it's because my husband and I are now back to work and instead of running all day with us, he spends more time in his crate. Your dog looks an awful lot like Ponzo in stature. That was neat to see, since most corgis we meet are about 30 lbs. When I get home from school today, I will get out the measuring tape!

OK re-measured... that was hard! soon as I picked up the tape measure The Girls thought it was a snake! And being the protective Girls they are immediately ran for cover under the bed! I feel so safe!!! LOL

Em is 10.5" tall and 17' long. Amazing the difference when I don't add the width of her back and part of her neck

Chloe is still under the bed protecting the dust bunnies!

No, that isn't the correct way to measure a dog to see how it conforms to the standard, get an accurate height or length for the purposes of the "experiment" going on here. That would be how one would measure their dog to order a coat online for their dog for example.

Height is taken at the withers. The withers is "The region defined by the dorsal portions of the spinous processes of the first two thoracic vertebrae and flanked by the dorsal (uppermost) portions of the scapula. Clear as mud right? Reread Michael's explanation for a clearer one.

Okay, take your corgi and run a hand up the front leg following through into the scapula/shoulder blade. Think of the shoulder blades like butterfly wings that are closed up. The highest point where the shoulder blades "meet" is your withers. In the drawing, if you draw a line from the center of the front paw upwards, then you are in the withers region, much further forward than where they have drawn the line for height. Length is from the withers to the base of the tail (or where it would be with some Pembrokes).

To really get an accurate measurement of height though, one needs to use a wicket. Just don't get too caught up in all the numbers and measuring. Weight should be in proportion to overall balance and size and you should be able to feel the ribs on your corgi. The amount of bone, age, sex, structure are all influencing factors in how one's corgi looks.

Debbie

If one was to make a conscientious effort to improve the breed then they would always breed within the standards. I think the point that was trying to be made is that the reason corgis are getting bigger is because some breeders are not maintaining that standard. Perhaps if the national shows would be more strict in following the standards then this wouldn't be happening either. No criticism intended to anyone's dogs or breeders just an observation.

That's good to hear. I assumed Tuck would stop growing at around a year. Over the summer he grew longer. His Vet even noticed it when we ran into her one day.

Seeing that everyone's dogs seem to be coming in as 13-14 inches tall......

Do you compete in things like Agility in the Tea Cup Class? My Agility Center is having a Tea Cup competition and the rules is that dogs must be no taller than 17 inches at the withers.

Any thoughts?

I would love to see that - I bet it would be so much fun. Are you going to take Tuck?
