I am not a fan of canned food for dogs. But I am a fan of giving a dog more than a daily bowl full of only kibble. I am sure you can do better than this as an alternative to your overfeeding and perhaps under-exercising.
Recently at agility competitions, Taylor won packets of herby museli especially for dogs and I have been sprinkling some of this over Taylor's meat portion of his meal, and he seems to enjoy this different aspect to his meal bowl. By the way, the recent meats that Taylor has been getting is sheep's tongues and sheep's hearts (both cooked - boiled for three minutes). |

Hayashi, I would say that if she is getting added flax seed oil AND shed stop in addition to an already rich in omega salmon based food she probably is getting too many added calories/fats. Most of the super premium foods have flax seed and other good oils added in already. Check the ingredients on the brand you are feed and you will probably see flax seed oil alreayd contained within. I personally add wild salmon oil to Dillon' s food but only a tiny bit and again I do weigh him weekly and if i see the scale starting to creep up I cut back on his meals ( usually his dinner meal is the one that is adjusted nightly depending on how many treats he had that day.) This method works becuase you can see on a weekly basis what changes should be made and adjust the food accordingly. This way their weight always stays under control.

Peggy, The terms "Power Walking" and "Walking" are two different things. My kids play sports and have participated in Sports training. With Power walking, you are walking at an upper pace of the natural range, (just shy of jogging) to get your heart rate up and your arm swing is different than someone who is walking at a normal pace. It also burns more calories. It is a whole different form of exercise than the normal pace that one would think of when told to walk. If a sports trainer told one of his athletes to walk and the other to Power Walk, they should both be moving at a different pace. and the power walker would obviously, be way ahead. And I know you know this, so I am not picking on you.

Another vote for 1 cup a day. We feed Ace 1/2 cup of kibble twice a day. We add a tablespoon of plain yogurt to his evening meal and he really enjoys it.
One tip that might help you for a no calorie treat is ice. Sounds strange, but Ace will do anything for a piece of ice to chew on. Bethany and I discovered this one night while traveling. We had a small ice chest with drinks in it and as I emptied it out Ace munched on the ice as it fell on the floor. We had him doing every trick in the book that night just for pieces of ice. It was quite funny. He thought he was really getting something special. Now whenever one of us gets a drink in the kitchen and use the ice dispenser on the refrigerator, Ace comes running in looking for a treat! |

That's funny! Jackie does that too! And before she learned to associate ice with the noise of the ice maker, she was afraid of it . . . now she comes a'running.
(also if we say the word "ice")

I tend to walk at a fairly quick pace when walking anyway, but not "power walking". IMO, corgis do not need power walks. Just walking with their owners at whatever pace is comfortable for the owner is good. However, if you have a dog that wants to stop and sniff or mark a lot picking up the pace does help. ![]() Peggy

will restructure her meals again. I try bring her for long walks but she is very stubborn. She would refuse to walk after about 10mins & then she just wouldn't move. She will also use her neck to "hold on " to the leash & refuse to be pulled.... I end up carrying her home.....

Cindy - Here are some reasons: I don't believe there is any canned food on the market that is a complete and balanced meal for dogs. For a normal healthy dog, canned food generally contains more liquid than is necessary - so the value is not apparant. Of all the rubbish designated dog food, canned food along with dog rolls are at the worse end of the spectrum. This does not include all canned food or all dog rolls.

Hyashi--have you tried a halter style leash? It places no pressure on the throat and is attached over the back with front legs through the harness and second strap at about mid body. Also when Buddy seems to want to stop early for a walk: 1) sometimes it's for his business and he needs to smell around a bit for the right place (we carry bags for this) and continue, (2) he seems bored and we carrying a ball with us to throw about 5 yards away while we race to see who gets it first which distracts him and motivates him to continue the walk, (3) changing up the pace every fifty yards or so also seems to make it more interesting for him to continue his walk, (4) we meet up with neighbors and walk our dogs together usually 1x week which Buddy reallly enjoys, (5) when Buddy was a puppy and we first started walks, we measured out his morning kibble and brought some with us and treated and praised him about every block, then with each successive walk lengthened the distance between treats/praise and now he receives a treat when we return home. Just some thoughts...

You know some of the preimum dog food companies make canned foods too. Eagle, Solid Gold, Californa Natural, Wysong and Merrick. I think they're all good foods and would be fine. Personally, I think feeding an all canned diet is more expensive and not as good for the teeth. But I sure won't condem anyone who does it. And depending on the dog, well, I've had older dogs who I've fed canned food to so they'll eat. Either it's smelled better or was easier for them to eat, didn't matter, with old guys I do tend to cater to them a bit. ![]() Peggy
