My brother has a Schipperke that belonged to my Mom. When she passed away four years ago, he took him over. Sweet dog that takes all sorts of abuse from his kids. I mean they crawl on him, hang on to his tail, pull his ears, etc...not the mean kind of abuse. Ol' Stitches just takes it in stride but I'm amazed he hasn't nailed one of them yet. One of the most laid back dogs I've ever seen. He seldom makes any noise at all. No tail on this boy but, he's woefully overweight at about 40 pounds.

Some dogs like boxers, Bulldogs, etc you're use to seeing with little or not tail. I was just surprised to see a Pembroke with one. I'd be more interested in the temperament than the tail.

Add poodles. Cockers, and well, there are quite a few breeds that are docked. And yes, most dogs with "half tails" are docked.

Peggy
You are absolutely right, but I just figure that if they say they've never seen a dog with out a tail, then they probably don't even know what a Schipperke is, ha! However, when I mention rottweiler a lot of times I get "Oh yeah, I never realized that before."

And in regards to the half tails, I just wanted to clarify...I knew those breeds tails were docked. Just making sure I don't look like I didn't know what I was talking about in my own response. HEHEHEHEHE!

True, but just wanted to make sure that everyone knew they do have tails, just not much.

No, I got that. Just wanted to add a couple more breeds.

If you are interested in seeing what breeds that are historically docked look like with tails... this is a good thread from and Australian dog forum I go to regularly.

Dogzonline Forum Link

There is also a picture of the corgi who's tail was injured in there.
It takes some reading but gives a good overview of the debate that is happening here in Australia now.

I love looking at Zip and Zia's little "nubby" butts! Those little nubs going back and forth always make me smile!

It's interesting to see a Pem with a tail. Since Toby goes to work with me I get alot of people asking What happened to his tail? I also get alot of "What kind of dog is he?" One self proclaimed dog expert was convinced he was a German Shepard/Dacshund cross. She didn't believe me when I said Toby is a Corgi.

I kinda like the fact that both of my dogs have little stubby tails. Nothing like watching their little Corgi and Schipperke butts wiggle when they get excited.

My personal favorite is miniature collie. Since Jackie is a fluffy - we get that a lot.

No, she's actually an angora rabbit / fox crossbreed. They're the newest rage - a little tricky to breed, since one parent wants to eat the other . . . but worth their weight in gold . . . would you like to invest in my breeding program?

Ada's tail is docked, but is a bit longer than desired. When she's older and not quite so wiggly (haha, will never happen, I know...) I'll thin it down so it doesn't look like a big pimple on her rear!

I agree with you - I've seen puppies docked before. As soon as they were put back in the box, they went back to their normal puppy whimpers.

My mom worked for a vet for 21 years - so during my young life, I spent a lot of time at the clinic seeing various procedures. That's one of the reasons I ended up NOT becoming a vet - I had to see a necropsy on a dead puppy once. Too sad, too sad.

For me, I wanted to be a vet too and did a little apprenticeship as a older teen and the first non neuter related surgery I saw was the draining of a huge hematoma on an German shepherd's ear- all that blood and i passed out! That was my first clue that i might not be so great, then i had to see an euthanasia and It broke my heart and i knew that it was not the job for me.

Start by telling them to begin with there is no such thing as a minature collie. They are shelties, Shetland Sheepdogs.

It is amazing the different reactions to our dogs. For my cardigan I got the opposite reaction...Is THAT a corgi? I explain it is a cardigan corgi and the other breed Pembroke don't have the tail. They figure it might be a mix because of the tail!

I used to do that. First I would explain that there are no such thing as mini collies, then I would tell them about Shelties, and finish with all the reasons that Jackie is not a Sheltie . . . but my husband scolded me for being mean to the ignorant people. He told me I should just tell them what she was and go on my merry way. He's always telling me that not everyone knows as much about animals as I do, and I should be tolerant.

Awe that's no fun Jess!! When Riley was a baby I told people she was a rare Canadian Miniature Snow-Fox Dog - people nodded and looked at her with much greater respect!!! I even had a guy ask me if she was a fox when she was about 12 weeks old - and I said yes, I'm walking my miniature tail-less fox in Toronto! Sarcasm, the sport of kings!!!!
