hi, has anyone ever heard of the "red death"? our first AMAZING,BEAUTIFUL cardi died of this.the breeder eventually told us that this is what the breeders called it. emergency vet had no clue,we lost him.i have been unable to find much info on this. if so, do you know if it is hereditary? we still grieve for him !!! been 3 yrs.now. thanks, Molly

I've never heard of anything called that in Cardigans. vonWillebrand's Disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder similar to hemophilia in humans occurs in the Pembroke breed, but not heard of much in Cardigans. That's not saying it can't happen in a Cardigan, but there aren't any real verified cases that I am aware of and there hasn't been mention of any on the ShowCardi list. IF you get more information please share, I'd be very interested.

i have found it hard to find info. i did find a little about it,however,it has been a while back,and my memory is not what ie used to be! LOL! I do know it is VERY fast acting,and if not caught in time,DEATH! the e-vet did exactly the OPPOSITE treatment that should have been done.this is all hindsight, of course.IF only my own vet had been on duty! they need transfusions, liquids,NO FOOD. it usually happens before 4 yrs.i vaguely remember all this,and cannot remember the name,other than what my breeder called it.it just would help to talk with someone who knew about it and could offer more info. old sayihg 'MISERY LOVES COMPANY".my husband and i have never gotten over it!! forgot to mention that they bleed from EVERYWHERE.Our Wilbur's started with blood in stool,and they do not have fever.he never acted sick, which is so misleading!! Molly

There's ehrilichia.
Ehrlichia: AIDS of the Canine World

Parvo can have some similar symptoms, that is usually in puppies and young dogs not appropriately vaccinated though.

no.not any of those,and Wilber was up to date on everything. there are NO symptoms,other than blood in stool.saw it late friday,sat.,wanted to wait till mon. for my vet.got worse late sat.,sun.morning to emergency.he ACTED normal!! we left him for treatment,vet. called it something,not alarmed and we left.to be short,he died monday morning around 4 o'clock. Sorry, I've not been able to find anything. I did check for references on the ShowCardi list and came up blank there too. Without knowing what it was, it is hard to say if there is a genetic component. IF you find it though, please let us know.

DNA testing for Denerative Myelopathy is here! Corgis are the only small breed that can get it. My dog, Yogi, has the symptoms, loss of rear leg use, and thanks to CorgiAid, now has a cart. Yogi had MRIs which showed his leg use was not due to spinal injuries. I just sent out the swab test and awaiting results.

It is the responsibility of breeders to wean this out of the breed. If you plan on purchasing a puppy, please know that breeders will not know if the parents have the gene as the test just came out. It is the duty of breeders to test all their dogs, both male and female parent to test for it. The test needs to come back, "clear." The parents need to be neutered/spayed if the test comes back positive ("affected"). We need to insist that breeders be responsible now so that we, the owners and our loving corgis don't go through this in the future. It is heartbreaking. Below are the websites for testing both using blood and swab.

free test. The website with that info is:
Degenerative Myelopathy - Ongoing Research.

overnight in an insulated container with cool packs.
