IVDD Study for Cardigans

Dr. Mark Neff at UC Davis regarding his work to identify
marker genes for IVDD. He was very interested in
working with more cardigan people as a result since this information,
combined with the cooperative efforts of Sealyham breeders is helping to
narrow down the potential genes involved. Samples from MinPins are also requested.

The signs are very positive that at least some high risk marker genes
may soon be identified.

I am urging anyone who owns a cardigan which has experienced a spinal
problem which has not yet been submitted, please contact Dr Neff to
obtain a DNA kit for submission.

This is a simple cheek swab test which will cost nothing more than
possible return postage, as far as I know.

Dr. Neff also expressed an interest in accessing pedigree databases to
further his study and assist in tracking the relationship of the
'cluster' groups of affected individuals which have been identified so
far. I gave him a few links to sources that I thought might be helpful,
but if anyone else can offer valuable pedigree information, he would be
very appreciative.

Your generosity could save many cardigans from suffering in the future!

I am also urging any clubs holding upcoming supported, regional or
national events to contact Dr. Neff to see if kits for this study might
be made available for distribution via pre-order as part of health
clinics during the same shows.

Here is Dr. Neff's e-mail if you would like to contact him for a kit or
ask a question: mwneff@ucdavis.edu
Another contact to request kits is Katy Robertson: krrobertson@ucdavis.edu
