Linda - look up the Pem Corgi standard for what should be the ideal gait. Corgis vary quite noticeably and it would be most unusual if any "style" is very much of a hindrance though there are better actions than others for a Corgi to get from A to B in a typical balanced fashion especially when running at speed.

X-raying is the most definitive way to know. A number of things can effect the wiggle - age (and Cody is at a somewhat awkward age on movement), weight, muscle tone, rear structure, length of loin can all be factors in the way they sashay about.

Bunnyhopping is also a sign that your dog is protecting her hips..When she runs with her two back legs together! Myfanwy definately has a bit of a John Wayne swagger!!

Dillon came from parents who were both x-rayed for hips and were certified - no hip displasia in their lines ( based on puppies produced by this breeder) and Dillon is healthy, strong hips and he too swaggers, he waggles his but side to side when he walks, he also sometimes stands and appears to be a bit pigeon toed...in the back only...the front feet point perfectly straight. I think it is a corgi thing for them to have that "wiggle" when they walk!

I love watching Ace walk and run for that matter! He sways when he walks and hops (or gallops) when he is really running. I thought maybe he sway was based on his weight but am glad to hear other corgis do the same.

I often worry about Rupe's sashay. He is quite pigeon toed at the rear and especially if he's tired, he'll have quite a wiggle. But what GlenCorgi said makes sense about different builds. They never seem to bother him, I'll just keep watching as he ages to make sure he's okay. We live in a walk-up apartment so my two do 15 flights of stairs a day (5 trips out) so I would imagine that builds different muscles than dogs who don't so a lot of stairs.

Jackie has 3 speeds . . . sashay, sassy trot, and scamper!

She reminds me of Marilyn Monroe when she sashays!!

I know corgis are more prone to hip problems since their body is quite long. Milo has a gallop, scurry, and a run. He is so far young so no signs of trouble - thank God. But do keep an eye out on certain things. I sometimes rub Milo all over just to check for any lumps or unusual things - he thinks I'm giving him a good rub but I just want to make sure he's ok.

Then, I pick him up (all good 25 lbs of him) and look him in the eye to check for anything there - dust, a fallen fur, or cloudiness. He smiles at me not knowing what I'm doing.

I see not just a lot of corgi lovers here but a lot of very responsible and caring owners. Bravo to all!

I do the same thing to Jackie, checking to see if I feel anything unusual, or if she shows any signs of pain when I touch her. I think she's used to my poking and prodding by now . . .

Make sure when you are doing that to check their armpits and their necks for lumps and bumps. Lymphoma is often characterized that way, the lymphoma Riley had was not common and could never have been felt.

I am of course, a little paranoid about that and I delight in tickling Rupert when I check him out.
