breeding colors - 07-11-2006, 10:26 PM

If I breed a red and white sire with a red head tri dam, are my odds of getting more tri out of the litter better if the dam parents are both tri as well? Or do I have just as good as a chance if the dams parents are tri and red and white.

What's behind a RHT dam isn't a factor in the colors you can get in the breeding you've described.

Ok, thanks. Can you tell me what my odds are of getting tri out of a litter in that situation?

What matters is what the colors are behind the sire. IF he's pure for red then your chances of getting tris is zero. IF he is tri-factored, then you have a 50/50 chance of tris. What Mother Nature might hand you, even if the stud is tri-factored is a whole litter of red & whites or a whole litter of tris.

Color really should be the least important factor in a breeding though. Temperament, having passing hips from OFA or Penn-Hip, clear eyes from a CERF exam are all far more important priorities <imo>.

Debbie, you sound pretty knowledgable about breeding and problems. I have a 6 month old male that has what looks like little white scratches through the color of his eyes. The vet didn't say anything about it but it makes me wonder what it is. Any ideas? I don't think my breeder was totally on the up & up. My contract is hand written on the back of a torn envelope and not signed. ~Shelly
