Question Fluffy's - 08-13-2006, 12:17 AM

I went to the search and read on there regarding Fluffy's and I am wondering what is the difference in a Fluffy Corgi? Sassy is just a loved and pampered pet and it would make no difference to us but I am just wondering how you tell. Is there a flaw in the way their hair lays or is it longer. I feel stupid not knowing but I was just wondering if someone could explain it to me.

Thanks

A fluffy coated Corgi is a genetic fault, pure and simple.

There are degrees of fluffiness. Most fluffies have feathering - feather type hair on one or all of the following: ears, chest, legs, feet, hindquarters, underparts. Some fluffy Corgis are hardly detectable as such. Coats can just be softer, silkier and longer than usual.

Here is the CKC link for the breed standard, Fluffies are noted at the botton of the text.

The one thing I've commonly heard is that you can usually see more feathering around the ears. This is one of the first good indications as a puppy. Like Michael mentions, there are different degrees of fluffy coats. Plus AKC will only offer limited registration to fluffy corgis (meaning they don't encourage breeding).
If you talk to most fluffy owners, they will tell you fluffies are a very special! Many will tell you they have a much nicer temperment, but I don't know if there's any truth to that.
My Gizmo is a fluffy, he's very striking, and folks always want to stop and pet him. I always get asked what breed he is, which several think he's a sheltie.
Even though the coat is a flaw of the breed, you will find several fluffy lovers. I'm on a yahoo list called "fluffycult", some them have more than one fluff, and if they lose their beloved fluff, they usually try to get another.
I took Gizmo to Corgi Nationals and met several folks that had top show dogs, but they told me they had a very special fluffy corgi at home.
I know they claim they can now genetically test for the fluffy gene, but I think most folks love for them to occasionally show up in a litter. This isn't the type of genetic flaw that can cause any physical health problems to the dog. You just might find yourself grooming your fluff more often.
Here are a couple links. This first one shows how my fluff looked as he grew up: http://community.webshots.com/album/245730048gQodQB
Here is a link to Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America and coat descriptions: http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/CorgiColor.html
If you want information on joining the yahoo group called "Fluffycult" just let me know and I'll get you the information.

In Cody's litter of 5 there was a "fluffy female". I would have chosen her first, except that she was already spoken for(First one to go).

I loved Gizmo's pictures. I can honestly see how people could think that
they are shelties.

As most of you know, ChloeLouise is a Fluffy. When we were selecting our pup from the litter of NINE, I was especially attracted to the fuzzy ones (there may have been as many as 4 that looked like little teddy bears!). I didn't know they were probably "Fluffies" - I only knew these pups were the most DARLING little fur-balls! Since Chloe was to be "just a pet" recognizing a "serious coat flaw" was not something that even entered my mind!! As she grew I realized she did NOT look "normal"!! She didn't resemble the Corgis on my calendar so I started researching what was "wrong"! That's when I discovered the Fluffy "defect"...and also discovered what LuvMyFluffy refers to - that Fluffy owners tend to be VERY pleased with their Fluffs. As I have mentioned on other threads where this topic comes up, I understand all the "preserving breed standard " concern - but that not withstanding - I am VERY PROUD of my Fluffy girl! We always are stopped on our walks by people who want to know what kind of dog she is! "Sheltie with short legs" is what is commonly assumed! So, I just do some "Corgi education" - I figure that comes with the territory now!

Chloe's ear feathering is most noticable - inside her ears as well as long fur just behind her ears. She appears to have a "mane" and the hair on her back is long and quite silky (not as long as Gizmo's, however!). Her belly fur is very long and would drag on the ground if we didn't have her trimmed regularly. She has feathering on her legs and a nearly ridulous amount of RUMP fur!! She does not have cute little Corgi "pants" - she sports a floor-length SKIRT when she isn't groomed! And there is the only disavantage that I can see - her, ahem, "rump area" is frequently "not fresh" ...

Hope my perspective has been helpful!

And, YES, I would be interested in the "Fluffycult" information!! (by the way, Gizmo is an exceptionally beautiful Fluffy!! )

Thanks for the nice comments on Gizmo! ChloeLouise, he also gets that long skirt, which I trim to look more like a regular coated corgi. I thought it was interesting when I went to watch the dog show how much time everyone spends on fluffing up the pants.

It seems to very true that fluffy Corgis overwhelmingly have lovely natures.
A theory as to why this can be so was offered to me fairly recently from a leading NZ-based animal behaviourist who said that the gene that produces fluffy coated Corgis must be very close to the personality/temperament gene.

Take it or leave it.

I was asking the breeder who I am getting Jemma from about Fluffies and why there seem to be so many in Canada right now. She seems to think that some breeders are going for what she calls the glamour coat and the more cutsie looking Corgi and are producing the Fluffies more often. While they may be a genetic fault, they are still Corgis and would of course have all the traits we love in the breed. I think that they are lovely and everyone here who has them obviously loves them just as much as a "regular" Corgi - well maybe not on vacuuming day.

I'm a big fan of my little fluffy also. And we get the sheltie question A LOT! When I explain the fluffy-corgi concept . . . most passersby say "I think she's cuter than the regular ones . . . I want one of THOSE).

I also keep Jackie's skirt trimmed into short pants, because of the "freshness" factor that Margo mentioned (plus I just LOVE the pants!). If you brush her for 5 minutes a day, upkeep is pretty minimal (easier to prevent mats than undo them!!!!!)

I'm going to check out the fluffy cult also - Thanks Emilie!!!!!

It'll be nice having more members added to fluffycult. Just so you know, many of the members like to talk about everything under the stars. One of our members just recently lost her dearly beloved fluffy, a beautiful BHT, which you don't see everyday.
I can see how fluffys can become very trendy, I had a friend tell me I should'nt have had Gizmo fixed (even though it was part of the agreement of getting him, and registering him). Since AKC doesn't recognize breeding a fluff, it just makes it even more special when you get one. Gizmo's breeder wasn't intending on doing the same match for breeding due to all the fluffs she got (5 or 6 out of 11), but the ones that aren't fluffs have done well in the show ring, and she's had request for another cross breed.
