It's time for a bath.... - 11-17-2006, 09:56 PM

How often do you bathe your Corgi? Milo gets a bath whenever I think he looks funky. He is getting his Thanksgiving bath this weekend...got to be spiffy and sweet smelling for the big day!

Does anyone brush their Corgis teeth? If so, how often? People make fun of me for doing that but in my opinion, if it saves him from painful gum disease and losing teeth, it is worth it. He hates it. Ugh, it is such a struggle. I use doggie toothpaste and a finger brush but i've seen dental wipes and liquid stuff you can squirt, has anyone tried that stuff?

Miss Gambler's scheduled bath is every week+1/2, more if and when needed, and only with oatmeal shampoo. Then there are the spa visits as a treat. I require that she smells good if she is getting on my bed and on my furniture. As for her teeth, I use the pads, using a brush never worked out.

A Corgi need only get a bath every three months, but if one uses really good quality dog shampoo that won't damage skin and dry up hair, and wants to rid their Corgi of loose hair more often, then a bath every three to five weeks is ok. Along with baths, Corgis should be groomed every day or second day for around five minutes and any patches of dirt cleaned off and areas like feet and tummy and rear daily checked for cleanliness.

If you buy dog toothpaste, the directions on the package will tell you. But I only clean Taylor's teeth once weekly now that his teeth cleanliness is under control and he gets a Eukanuba biscuit (good for dogs teeth) daily and his breath is not too bad.

I bathe Dillon 1x a month, three days post frontline treatment. I was using biogroom bronzing shampoo and it made his coat look spectacular, however after that bought of allergies, i stopped using everything with scent in it and bought him a veterinary hypoallergenic shampoo ( that i hate! makes his coat not as pretty). Now that things are cleared up with the allergies ( medication and such) I am going to go back to trying the bronzer shampoo and see how he reacts...he is due for his bath already.. I also brush and comb him once every other day for a few minutes. I clean his feet after a walk if he gets them dirty, and his butt is checked every time he goes to make sure he is clean. I clean his ears once a week using veterinary grade ear cleaner and clip his nails and then buff them with an emory board once a week, I clip the hair between his toes once every two weeks and i brush his teeth once a week , use the tooth cleansing pads every other day and once a month i check to see if there is any scaling needed on his back teeth...when there is i have a dental tool and i just gently scrape any begining signs of tartar. His teeth are always pearly white, though sadly he still has occasional morning breath! LOL!

Chip gets a bath about once a month unless he gets into something funky. He is due for another one. That oatmeal shampoo is wonderful stuff. It leaves Chip's coat so soft and silky. He enjoys his bath and loves the rubbing down he gets afterward. Then comes the earcleaning, nail clipping, etc. I need to start the teethcleaning routine but I have been holding off since his surgery kind of waiting for the memory to fade some. He does get 2 or 3 of the Science Diet T/d for teeth each day and his teeth are pearly white also.

Well I should have waited to post on this thread. My husband was working in the yard today and Chip was supervising and walking around the edge of our little pond. I called him back several times and he finally went off to play so I went in the house. Well low and behold the next thing I know Chip is at the door, covered in mud and dirty water. He fell in the pond so into the tub he went and his bath is done and over with for awhile and hopefully he learned his lesson. LOL I am glad it isn't cold today anyway.

Awww Chip, was it on accident, or does he love to take a dip in the pond?

Lord have mercy Cindi, I hope it was on accident. What a mess. He was covered from top to bottom with sand, mud, and water. But you know he didn't look unhappy and definitely no "i'm sorry" look so now you have me wondering. For anyone that doesn't live in the South or never visited, As Cindi can verfiy, there is nothing worse than the red mud in the south.

I can attest to that...Our place in NC has some red mud in one area of the very front yard ( in a drainage area) and I have to be very careful to keep Dillon out of it, the ONE and only time i let him walk through it, his feet needed special cleaning, that red clay mud stains something awful!

No doubt red clay doesnt come out of white feet very easy.

Will have to watch our little chipster to see how well he likes this pond. LOL

We play so much in the backyard, Buddy often comes in with the kids with dirt/mud up to his midline. So we just spray that area down and use minimal sudsing then a towel down and blow dry if needed. Usually, he dries quickly, because the dorsal area is kept dry. At times, he gets refreshed wtih "Cowboy Shower" we picked up from a grooming shop. The smell is fresh and neutral-not "perfumy". Buddy seems to like it as he comes right to us when we pick up the spray bottle. Routine hygiene generally entails 1x month full bath and ear cleaning, weekly dremel of the nails and toe pad hair shave with the electric shaver, and 2x week teethbrushing (Thanks Michael for the encouragement in a previous thread a few months ago which inspired us to try this ourselves).

We read in several books about anal gland cleaning. Is this necessary?? If so, that is definitely one chore we will subcontract out to a groomer vs. learning to do ourselves!!!!

Except for the summer, mine get a bath every month or every other. Tuck is a mud puppy and Lulu just follows. If it rains they get road side dirt on their tummies when we walk. And of course they roll in stuff constantly.

In the summer Tuck is in the lake and Lulu and he love the creek so they stay pretty clean on their own.

My Vet gave me an enzymatic toothpaste that I use w/the finger brushes 2 times a week.
