Preferred Brush - 01-17-2007, 07:32 PM

Hello all! Emma's coat is still growing like crazy and we are looking for the best brush. We bought a typical dog brush when we got Emma, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Any recommendations? Has anyone tried Shed-Ender? Furminator ($$$)?

I personally use a few things for Dillon- I comb him with a comb like this
http://www.showdogstore.com/index.as...PROD&ProdID=48

with one side course and one side medium works great- then i finish up with a boars bristle brush like this
http://www.showdogstore.com/index.as...PROD&ProdID=47
and when he is really shedding like crazy and i dont want it all on my rug , I take the shedding blade to him- outside on the deck of course because there are dead hairs flying everywhere. This is what the shed blade looks like:

I have not tried some of the brushes you see on tv that supposedly end shedding, i dont think that is totally possible ! I will be interested to hear what everyone else uses...

I was given the Shed-Ender for Christmas, but I haven't used it. I'll try it tomorrow and see what happens.

Checkers just started blowing his coat for the first time so I'm very interested to find out what works for everyone else. He just got a bath a couple of days ago to help assist the shedding process... I have found the bath, preceeded and followed by a good brushing helps the most for the shedding. For brushes I have the comb, slicker brush... and I've tried the "zoom groom". The comb didn't do much.. but the slicker and the zoom groom did okay. No matter what I use though it seems as though there is always lots more where that came from LOL. Looking forward to finding out what all works for others....

I use a brush like this - the slicker brush. It's got zillions of little hooked fine metal prongs and I find it works great on the dogs and the cats!

I use a brush like the slicker brush too. It seems to work pretty good, but Dudley has not started shedding a large amount yet either.

I have the Furminator - it works wonderfully on Mazie's undercoat.

I have a Furminator and use that as my main brush. It is amazing to me how much fur it pulls off my two.

Lulu is almost done blowing her puppy coat (I empty my vacuum cleaner 4 times a week!). So now back to regular shedding, oh joy!

Both dogs, Lulu in particular were in need of a bath. I furminated them (almost filled a plastic grocery bag with fur) in the morning, they had a play date, then off to the sefl serve dog wash. I used the dryer to blow even more hair off. Amazing what I pulled out of the drain then blew off.

Speaking of whick... maybe a good time to break out the furminator!

How old is Checkers again? The first real coat blow is usuall around one year of age, give or take a month or two depending on the season.

Bathing a dog will loosen up dead/dying hair. So bathing will speed up the blowing process as it releases the dead hair.

When my dogs are blowing coat I use a fine toothed comb, not super fine but not the wide or coarse teeth either. A slicker brush helps too.

Over the years I've tried the rakes, shedding blades, etc, and always end up returning to my comb. It still works the best for getting loose hair out.

Hold the hair back with your hand and comb from the roots out. I start with the pants on my dogs and work forward.

Cheryl next time we get together remind me to show you what I mean. Or maybe Sharon and I should do a short grooming "seminar" at the next Utah Corgi picnic?

I simply use a medium hard bristled brush with a handle. I go easy on the brush because the comb does most of the required work for a medium long to long-haired Corgi. Alternating your hand with a brush in doing small areas of your Corgi at a time, helps to gain a coat gleam from a regular grooming routine.

Sounds great Peggy! Checker is about a year and a half now (May 13th will be two years)... so I guess he's blowing that first coat a little late... but his undercoat is not as dense as most corgis that I have seen so that may have had something to do with it as well. I have actually had a boxer/mastiff type mix once as a foster that blew his coat worse than any dog.... and I didn't even know he HAD an undercoat until it started coming out all over the place! It was pretty funny to see actually.... especially since he was such a big goof.

My favorite brush is AT THE GROOMERS!!
Seriously, tho - I started TRYING to brush ChloeLouise THE DAY SHE CAME HOME - at 7 weeks!! Treats - love - praise - tough love - ALPHA voice - NOTHING has worked...to say she HATES to be brushed is an understatement! Occassionally I can take a swipe at her but she regards the brush as a mortal enemy and just the sight of it sends her into the next room OR a barking fit! This dilemma is of course complicated by her Fluffiness...
