shampoo ? - 02-02-2007, 05:47 PM

I know we have talked about how often our corgi gets a bath but I am wondering about shampoo...

Emma has problems with {{whisper}} odor - seems that just a week after a bath she starts to smell again. She isn't rolling in anything to cause this... just seems like her fur has a natural pungency to it and it's not Channel #5

Any ideas what I can try to help my little Le Pew?

Petsmart carries one called Fresh and Clean. I think you can get it at Wal Mart as well. It works pretty good and should help you with your problem.

I use Biogroom bronzer shampoo and the scent of that shampoo lasts. His fur smells so fresh and clean for at least a week before the scent starts to fade but even then he doesn't get stinky...well, except for his stinky feet, which smell by day two -but we kind of like them that way LOL!

Lulu has a smelly head!!!!!

It's not her breath (I thought maybe a bad tooth). And the rest of her body doesn't smell. But she has a smelly head! It's bizarre. Even after a bath, she still smells funny. Fortunately, it's not all the time.

I use mostly Buddy Wash from Cloud Star.

What is the best way to wash a puppy's head and face. When I gave Dale his bath, I avoided the head and face area and that could use a good wash. It's been too cold here to give him a second bath but as soon as the weather has a turn for the better, he is back in the sink.

I use a soapy wash cloth for the face.

Ditto.

Thanks for the recommendation of Buddy Wash. I, of course, ordered it immediately when I read about it (also the Buddy Rinse! ). It came last week and we gave Jackie a bath this weekend . . . LOVE IT!!!! She smells clean without being perfumey, and she is SOOOOO SOOOOOOFT!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . .

ETA: Jackie has frito feet, like her cousin Dillon. Even right after a bath . . . fritos. It's a strange thing to love about your dog, but I agree with Emilie.

LOL Jessica, that is hysterical! So true, Dillon has the frito feet ( or sometimes burnt popcorn...) either way they sure do get funky - and yes that is actually something that i kind of find intoxicatingly stinky LOL! Now i am curious about that shampoo...maybe i will get a bottle ( why not, I already have 4 different brands of shampoo in the house! ) I cant wait to pet Jackie myself! She looks soft.

I always keep those wipeys on hand...I use some "puppy fresh" smell. In fact it smells like my John Frieda shampoo. I use those frequently, like when Ponzo finds some dead worms or rabbit turds to roll in for that fresh out of the sewer smell he seems to like so much! I also use those wipes on his Frito feet as Jackie and Dillon apparently share the smelly tootsies syndrom too. Those are great for that, just a quick swipe on each foot and we are in business. But then I have to kiss his feet a couple times and clap them together you do babies feet...weird I know but who can resist those little feets?

NO wierder than me sniffing Dillon's smelly toes every night and saying "phew, stinky" then passing him over to my husband to do the very same thing...Dillon loves the attention... I bought some wipes one time, that were so perfumed that it was worse than the natural stinky...
Does anyone know if HUMAN baby wipes ( i dont like baby powder smell but LOVE some of the aloe and fruity smells they have nowadays) are safe to use on dog feet? Right now, Dillon has been getting his feet washed twice a day in the sink after each walk - They are dumping so much road salt to combat our total of 4 inches of snow this season and I must wash his feet as they get so irritated from the salt.

Emilie,

I actually bought some Huggies Alcohol free baby wipes to clean Cody's feet when we come in after a walk - There was another brand of baby wipes for "sensitive skin" - Cody is not one to lick his feet, but I would think that the wipes would be safe to use - does anyone know differently?

I find it a lottle strange and previously unknown to me that some Corgis have a natural skin odour that is not sociallly acceptable. I don't believe that even the world's expensive and leading shampoos for dogs are going to have a lasting effect that will remove a natural odour. But there are of course canister perfumic products around that give a dog a delightlful smell which can last for some time and can easily be applied in seconds over and over again. These products are well known to conformation show handlers.
Bad breath is a common occurance and often the cause is the kind of food your Corgi gets. So often the cure is a change of diet. Attention to gums and teeth is another way of getting rid of bad breath - so teeth cleaning via dog toothpaste is a solution. There are also dog products that freshen up a dog's breath.
