snow melt - 02-24-2007, 07:45 PM

My goofy neighbor poured some blue snow melting stuff on his sidewalk and it must have bothered Milo because he actually layed down and started licking his paws. I wonder if it burned? I never saw him react that way. I got him away from it asap and made him walk in snow to help get it off until we could get home for a proper washing off.

I saw snow melty stuff at Petsmart that is supposed to be formulated for being safe under dog paws...has anyone used this and is it effective as other snow melt stuff? It is pricey, $14! (and you don't get much) It would take 3 containers to properly cover my sidewalk and walkway!

The blue ice alternative is just another chemical for snow melt - a few people around here do use it and i try to avoid all of those things on our walks (impossible to avoid completely unless i carried the boys the whole walk!) but i would definately stop milo from trying to lick it off, and especially if it is windshield wiper fluid as that has antifreeze in it which is toxic... but the chances that a neighbor was using liquid windsheild wiper fluid to melt his ice is slim. unless he is
I have used the pet safe ice melter- it is effective, maybe not quite as much as the harsher chemicals but almost. I would shop around to see if you can find it cheaper, if you are taking about the little plastic container with a handle ( i think it is only 2 lbs or so) I have seen it in petstores (petco and petsmart) for $11 but in places like Bed bath and Beyond and a few other non pet store places for as litte as $6.99 - check around and see if you can find it cheaper- but yes it works and doesn't seem to bother the feet.

Thanks Emilie, I will have to shop around for a better price. I don't think my neighbor would be goofy enough to use window washer fluid. This blue stuff was in granule form. Right now snow melt is scare as hens teeth in Lancaster...went looking today before the snow came and no one had any! Yikes!
