undercarriage protection? -
03-01-2007, 10:02 AM
Hi, this is my first post here! My Millie loves to go for walks but ths time of year is gets so messy. Yesterday she came back with a belly covered in mud even though we were being careful. I can usually weasel out a few minutes for a walk, but the cleanup afterwards takes so long that sometimes I just go alone rather than deal with it. I thought maybe some kind of clothing might protect that area, but from what I can see they mostly cover the back and not the belly. Is there anything out there that gives maximum belly coverage and can be used year-round (not insulated)?

Hello,
I know we had been on this topic awhile back, and I think it was in regards to fluffies and trying to find something that would keep the clumps of snow from forming on their tummies.
I, myself don't use anything other than washing Cody's underside with a wet paper towel or sometimes I use baby wipes. I know their tummies can get very dirty and it seems like an endless job especially in the spring when the snow is melting around here and there is so much slush.
I have seen some articles of clothing for dogs such as snowsuits or these stretchy body suit type garmets, but I think they are special ordered and made to fit for your dog, and I am not sure how comfy they would be on a short legged Corgi.

Hi,
I too use wet paper towels; baby wipes and a hand towel to dry Zachary off. Sometimes, if he gets really muddy, I have have him stand in the bath tub with a little warm water in it and give him a "paw bath", which of course includes his belly. I once tried something made for his belly that you could tie on him, but he ended up peeing on it!
I just cannot leave Zachary behind when I go for a walk....it is one of his favorite things to do.

Jackie is a fluffy (no, really?), and I have a jacket for her to wear in the snow to keep the snowballs from forming (as Linda mentioned). But she only wears it when we are walking in the snow. If it's muddy - I just let her get muddy and dry her off with her towel when we come inside. You could also keep a spray bottle by the door to spray off the belly mud, then dry with a towel. Such are the perils of having a low-rider.

Another baby wipes fan here, & we can't do without our roll of 'choose-a-size' paper towels.
Before Dylan & I head out for a walk (remember it RAINS here a lot!) I lay out a towel and those two items on the big mat in the garage. When we come in, the cleanup kit is ready for us. I find that it is easiest to have him lay on his side while I wipe him, switch sides and then have him stand to finish brushing off the road dirt.

well we are having the same issue here, and they come back completely muddy, so i have actually been carrying them on by one to the sink and spraying their undercarriage and washing their feet to get all that dirt and mud off...then towel dry and tada, clean bellies, armpits and toes!
This time of year does get messy...

I just had an idea, Motrose has 2 lifts. This larger I bought has straps and clip fasteners (as on the snap collars) that go across the back.
With one of thse you could just cut off the handles, clip the straps around the dog and Voila!
I tried it on Dylan, small problem, it is the Med size, which is too long for him....it covered his doodle.
Something that could be worked on though. The lift, not his doodle.

Hi, We use the bath tub method to wash feet and under carriage in warm water and then towel dry. They feel pretty chipper after their wash and toweling. The Border Collie puppy is facinated with the water swishing by and going down the drain. We cannot wait until he helps irrigate the pastures. It should be a lot of fun.

now don't laugh but.... I have been thinking about making a corgi cozy.
Not for year round just on the really muddy, messy wet times when you don't have the time for cleanups.
Thinking nothing fancy - more along the lines of a piece of waterproof material cut to the length behind their their front leg to right b4 the back leg... then long enough to wrap up their sides and velcro close on top.... think corgi tube top.
Than when you run out and back in just RIP and voila - dry belly!

I was pondering that myself today and wondering what I could come up with, that would also vercro at the top and still look stylish:

How about a onsie made for babies? I think the 2T is what people have used for corgis.
