Shaving? - 04-05-2007, 06:28 PM

Hi, this is my first post hear!

I own show horses, show sheep, and a corgi that hangs around the barn with me.
At this time of the year I shave both the horses and sheep completley.
Since Moe (my corgi) hangs out with me at the barn, he gets SO muddy, his hair is in mats now to

I have been thinging about shaving most of him, but leaving his head with hair. Then making a sleasey for him like the horses...might just keep him clean.

DO you think he would look really stupid? How long does it usually take for corgi hair to grow back?

I have been told that shaving or trimming corgi's coats is NOT good for them, and that the hair can grow in unevenly afterwards. Also, because corgis have a thick double-coat, their skin is very sensitive and shouldn't be exposed to the sun at all if possible...

...I hate to say it, but a better option might just be washing and brushing Moe every day after he hangs with you in the barn!

Although it may be easier for cleaning it could be very dangerous to shave your Corgi. All dogs who have coats that shed should really not be shaved. This endangers their coats natural ability to moderate their body temperature - to keep them warm when needed and to keep them cool as well. Heather is also right in saying your dog could also be very badly sunburned and be prone to skin cancers as well.

You may just need to set aside a couple of times a week to give him a good brushing.

I walk my Corgis near a school and we meet up with an American Eskimo dog. The family that has her shaves her every summer.

I need to talk more w/ Amanda but we had a few sunny days already and Lulu spent a lot of time outside in the sun. Her eyes were pretty pink and her nose was pink also. I think it was Amanda who told me she uses sun screen on her white faced dog.

He gets a bath (not with shampoo, just a corgi in the tub) once a week anyways as well as a 30 min. grooming every day.

But I think I am going to go on a major brush shoping spree soon...maybe I can find something to get his butt mats out lol.

Hi Motown,

I know that when Joni was spayed it took months for the the hair on her belly to grow back. Maybe a good option would be some sort of goretex body suit that you could put Moe into while in the barn.

I know it is really annoying to wash your dog and then have them filthy again in a matter of days. The worst here is the amount of grime that gets on Joni when we walk after a rain. Mud all up on the undercarriage.

when Chip was neutered they shaved his pants - unfortunately, it has taken a year for them to grow back and his little fanny still isn't what it used to be. I would not recommend shaving a corgi. A good brush should do the trick and once you get the mats out, daily brushing for awhile should keep them out.

I put baby sunscreen on my dogs' noses Susan. I use the purple stuff so I can see it - then it fades and becomes invisible.

Hey MoTown, what kind of sheep. I used to raise registered Lincolns and a spinner's flock of big spotted Corriedale crosses. I didn't have a corgi then, and now that we're herding, I long for them. I love spring and baby lambs and shearing!

And I showed Palominos and later Paint horses. Bred, owned and showed the 1999 National Ch. Amat. Yearling Lunge Line Pinto horse. I might breed my mare pretty much the same way as the breeding that produced him next year.

Maybe you don't have to shave your dog. Just sleazy him. Or put a kid tank top on him. I just hose mine off and he's pretty wash and wear. But, he's a pretty short-coated dog.

Good Luck

Zoom Grooms work well. The most effective method I know of is three steps.

1) Good brushing through
2) Thorough combing with a wide tooth comb
3) Second comb through with a narrower tooth comb

Repeat as necessary.

Hi Bayoucorgi! I have Shetland Sheep, my corgi is amazing around them, I think he would love a whole heard to herd, I only have 4 at the moment.

I show Andalusians and Arabians, but I use to show Paints to...only at local shows though. I have an Andalusian Filly whom is showing extreme potential, and am hoping she has what it takes to show nationals next year.

There are such really good dog shampoos around nowadays that it is possible to bath your Corgi as often as weekly and do very little harm to the Corgi's coat or skin. Just be wary of the shampoos that are not recommended.

Yes Susan it was me. Sam is pretty much all white on his head so I use baby sunblock on his nose, under his eyes and his ears. Last year he got burned quite badly- it happened in one day at an agility trial- the nexy day the poor guy was pretty red. I always put it on him now if there is sun! You can even get it in a conveneient deoderant type application now...very dog friendly!

As for shaving- my advice is the same as everyone elses. Not Recommended.
