Paw Care in Winter - 12-12-2007, 12:34 PM

Has anyone used paw butter on their corgi's pads during the winter? It is suppose to moisturize and help heal cracks in their pads. Also help keep them from being irritated by the salt on the sidewalks and streets.

If you have used it, any certain brand that you would recommend?

I haven't, but I might go look for some! We're starting out with a snowy winter again this year, and I spent all of last winter washing paws on the way back in after every walk because we had so much much ice melt compound on our porch, and I figured it was really hard on the dog's feet.

Bag Balm is an old standard and works well. I rarely use it, but for the occasional need, it does the trick.

Is bag balm safe if they lick it off their paws? I have some that i have used in the past on cuts for both my corgis and my cats, but i was curious if it could cause any harm if licked off.

I have used musher's secret on paw pads and have found it helps keep the road salt from burning my corgi's feet... I also bought some special moisurizing paw butter for their feet after they have been cleaned off after our walks to help moisturize their feet in winter. The road salt where i live is awful and both my corgis have issues with their feet burning - so we have to be careful where we walk and make sure to have protection on their feet before we go out..

Lots of people use it on their dogs. Paws, on scratches on mom's belly when she's nursing puppies, etc. I'd say it's safe.

That's interesting. I've never heard of paw butter, so I looked up the Musher's Secret that was recommended. We don't get much ice or snow here, but these paw waxes indicate that they protect paws against not only ice and snow, but hot pavement and sand. Hot pavement we definitely have here. I may have to try some. I even wonder if it might help a bit with Charlie's mild contact allergies from the grass.

I do like Bag Balm for cuts and scrapes (after an irritation has occurred), but the paw wax products look like they protect the paws and prevent irritation while you're out walking.

Thanks for bringing up this topic!

We've used Musher's Secret on Gizmo, and it works fairly for snow and ice. We've also used Vitamin E in a roll-on form (from GNC), and that works well to heal his paws.

Thanks so much for your help. I especially appreciate the suggestions you have given. I will see if the local pet stores have any of these, or go online to find them. The ice is gone from our first round of storms, but you can still see the salt on the roads and where it was thrown up on the sidewalks. Our second storm is headed in this weekend, and the trucks will be out in full force again spreading that awful stuff.

Has anyone used dog booties on a Corgi? Or any kind of dog?

My rottweiler had leather-soled booties. We used to go camping a few days each month and occassionally there would be lots sticker burrs or very small sharp rocks along the trails. He was perfectly happy to wear the booties as long as his paws were healthy.

One time, he was wading in the river and cut one of his paw pads open. I cleaned the wound, wrapped it and tried to put the bootie over to protect it. He was not happy wearing the bootie with a pad injury.

Many many sled dogs use boots for training and for competing over 'dry' land (as opposed to snow). They can be easily purchased and can be adapted to fit a Corgi.

I bought boots for Dillon made by muttlucks... they were very well made boots similar to the kind that the mushers use on their dogs and they were not cheap... I sized him appropriately according to their charts, however the front booties seemed snug and the back ones were too loose... eitherway with some adjusting i got them to fit pretty well...only Dillon had issues walking in them...he tends to drag his front feet here and there when he walks, well in the boots he would trip on his own feet and fall on his face... I kept working with him to accept the boots but they were a giant pain in the butt, he hated them, he fell forward a lot on his face and often the back boots would fall off in deeper snow... i couldn't cinch them tight enough to keep them on without constricting the leg too much and causing Dillon discomfort... needless to say, the boots are never used... we just use musher's secret on both corgis and try to keep them out of the road salt as much as possible..

I tried Boots for Nick. It was a disaster. WHe didn't like them at all. First we put them on his front paws. His reaction was escaping from my wife and I by hopping on his hind legs around the apartment. All the time with his booted front paws in the air. We ended up using Mushers Secret which works well However we also make sure we clean his feet after every walk and if his paws are really bothering him we soak them in Epsom Salts and use bag balm.
