Dental care - 06-15-2006, 07:16 PM

I brought Taylor his first canine dental cream yesterday. It is thoroughly recommended by the owner of a large pet shop. It's called Dog -A-Dent (Beaphar brand) and is a Netherlands product and sold internationally. It come in a fairly large tube and with an extra long two prong toothbrush and costs NZ$21. Has anyone heard of it? I'll tell you how it rates with me after a week or so. The 'flavour' is what dogs are suppose to like - though so far Taylor is not fussed with it but takes it like a trooper ie after some coaxing, orders to sit and stay and tempted with treats.

Right at this moment, there is powerful thunder, and some lightning where I live and Taylor is 'draped' around my legs for protection.

I saw something new the other day for dental care.
It looks much like a bone ( green ) with tooth brush bristles on the ends where the dogs chews. Supposed to help them brush their own teeth for 15 mintues a day I think read on the package.

Let us know how Taylor does with it.

I have already started brushing Cody's teeth - he is not crazy about it, but
will cooperate somewhat. I try to do it every other day just to get him used
to it.

I also saw a dental brush(something like the one Cindy might have seen), but
this one was blue and had a brush on the end. You put dog toothpaste on it
and then the dog chews on it. It is in one of my pet supply books. I will have
to go back and check it out. I will let you know if I can find it again.

I was never successful in brushing Monty's teeth. She hated it as a pup and would constantly bite the brush with the toothpaste as she thought it was to eat.

I do make sure that the dogs get plenty of chewing, narrow bones, carrots, hard dry kibble and I've tried those Greenies as well. Their main treat is a very hard biscuit that they have each night before bed. We've been very lucky in that both dogs have very good teeth.

Next pup I will made more of an effort with the toothbrush.

If a dog's teeth need cleaning - there is probably no real substitute for properly formulated canine dental cream and having it applied by human hands (a quasi dentist) so that the job is done quickly and properly.

I agree Michael. Our Vets too clean dog's teeth, and I think that we also have canine dentists in the area as well. But in those cases, the dogs need much more work.

How often is the recommended times for brushing your dog's teeth at home?

I think they recommend brushing your dogs teeth at least 2 to 3 times a week.

The info on the packaging says - clean with the toothpaste daily if your dog gets sugary food, but otherwise two or three times a week. I can't imagine any Go Corgi member giving their Corgi sugar or salt as a regular menu item.

I brush Jackie's teeth about 2-3 times a week. I have one of those finger brushes (looks lke a rubber thimble, with bristles on it, slips onto your finger). I have been doing it since we brought her home, and the only trouble we have is her tongue getting in the way, trying to lick the paste off the brush (and her teeth). She loves that stuff. I say "brush teeth", and she goes right over to the basket where we keep it.

We use Hartz Beef flavored toothpaste and brush. Leah has been brushing Chloe's teeth and I thought she was doing Emma too (just because I ask her to). Turns out she wasn't because... we only have one toothbrush and Chloe doesn't want Emma Germs

SO guess I will need to get a 2nd brush because you know what Leah? Emma doesn't want Chloe Germs!

Dr Foster and Smith has a few different flavors of toothpaste for the dogs that you could try another flavor. I also use the thimble like one. Tinker starts licking as soon as she sees it and tries to lick Belle's mouth the whole time I do hers as well! The thimble things you can also find in the stores. My sister has one for my nephew so look in the baby section. Those two teeth ofhis need brushed too!!

I said I'd report back - so here it is: Taylor is into his second week using canine dental creme and he is well on his way to accepting the process as part of clealiness is next to Godliness sort of thing. His teeth are whiter and his breath is improved - a nicer smelling mouth for us humans. He opens his mouth wider, quite likes the flavour of the paste and still looks for what treats he's going to get after the two minute job is completed.
