It does sound like a fun place for Cody. I have never used one, so can't really offer much advice on this. Maybe you could put him in there one day while you are at work, and watch him on the web cam (which is SOOO cool, by the way . . . send me the link if you do put him in there . . . I want to watch too! ) to see how he does? If you like your trainer, his/her recommendation is a big plus!

If Cody is anything like Jackie, he'll have no problems handling the big dogs. With my little tomboy, I worry more about her playing with the small dogs. She's so rough, I'm afraid she'll flatten them!

Okay,

I just talked to a friend who boarded her dog this past weekend at a daycare
doggie place in town, but not the one I am looking into. anyway, Her dog is
now showing signs that he may have kennel cough. So my question is,
How would the dog have gotten kennel cough, if he has been vaccinated and
if the other dogs staying there were vaccinated(it is a requirement)??

With my hubby being military we hae relied heavily on kennels when we travel rather then putting them on a plane and have only had 1 problem, and actually when my neighbor picked up my dogs, he said I never would have left them there, Hubby took them. That was a whole drawn out thing though. (Cliffnotes version--Friend was supposed to keep them, decided day before we had to leave that he was going home as well. Couldn't use our regular kennel, was told place was good by another friend. Stopped payment on check, called BBB.) Especially if the place has web cams....I would love it! I agree with Fluffypants (sorry don't know name) I want to watch too so send me the link! At this rate all of us will be watching so even if you do go out of town we will all in essence watch your Cody for you!!

As far as the kennel Cough I am not sure how that works but also a little mystified on how dog gets it if vaccinated?!

The only thing is I will be going to a cottage in Northern Wisconsin where there is no hookup for computers - so I could not watch him anyway; but yes, you guys could and then tell me all the naughty things he did. I want to check out this place and see what it is like - the kennel cough thing scares me, even though it was not from this place, still the dogs are intermingled there a good part of the day.

I have talked to a second friend of mine who boarded their dog in a doggy day
care in our town(we have 2 of them) She said her dogs paws were quite
sore because this place uses pea gravel outside and of course with all the running over it, it really irritated his paws. Someone else told me that another
seperate time in regards to this place. She did say it really tired her dog out,
but to me, I don't think a dog coming home with irritated paw pads is a good
thing.

Linda,
I have to agree, no sore paws wanted.

If one has no other choice but to place your Corgi/s with commercial canine operations, then the best you can do for your baby/babies is to have joined a dog club or two in your town/area/region. That way, you can talk to other club members and you'll find not just one or two but maybe many who have experienced dealing with these operators or know of others who have and can pass on their remarks. That way you'll get to know which commercial canine care operators are recommended and just why. That takes a heck of a load off your shoulders as the chances of a mishap or mistreatment are minimised.
So my call, is get in with the crowd who are going to be valuable to you.

I live within a city of only 40,000 but close to my doorstep as it were, are four other cities - all larger or much larger and not a great deal further afield are two more cities and a large-ish town. So I have tons of choices of various dog clubs and there are a multitude of commercial canine care operators.

Anyone that I come in contact with that has a dog, I am always asking them
where they do their boarding. There are many different opinions. Some will like one establisment, others will bash that one. The place where I am taking Cody now for puppy classes does not like the doggy day care situation for dogs - yet, another trainer does not like the place I am going to now as a place for boarding - so who is one to believe? By the way, the going price here to board a dog over night at a halfway decent place is about $30 and that is if you can pick up your dog usually by noon the following day, otherwise, you pay another days rate.

I am curious as to what others pay to board dogs in their areas. I lived in another town several years ago and they had a nice boarding facility, where you could get rooms with mini furniture, radios and TVs for your dogs and the rooms where pretty good in size - they went for about $45

Linda - here is some useless-to-you information. There are over 70 canine and feline boarding establishments in the region I live in. I telephoned one of them whose advert includes: Abbey Manor Canine Motels will care for your dog as though they were at home. Individually exercised three times daily. Pick up and delivery.
The cost is NZ$14 (USA$10) per day for a Corgi (big dogs more expensive). Includes all food as individually required.
So it seems, things like this are considerably less expensive in New Zealand.

Lets just say Michael,

any place that would charge only $10 a day here is not a place where most
people would want to board their dogs.(at least around here). And they offer pick up and delivery where you live?? My vet used to charge $15, but they built a new facility within city limits and was not allowed to have outdoor runs due to ordinances, so they no longer offer boarding.

I took Cody this morning to the Doggy Day care for an evaluation and for a 2 hour stay. I was a bit nervous leaving him knowing that he would be intermingled with other dogs I did not know. She assured me that she would make sure they would be at his activity level. I went shopping to a nearby plaza to pass the time and she called me on my cell phone within 20 minutes of my departure to let me know that he was fine and doing well.

She said he was in with a Cocker, a border collie and a Westie and that Cody
seemed to get along best with the Westie that was there. She said that Cody
seemed to "like being chased", rather than being the "chaser", and that when
the other dogs "caught up to him", he kind of had this look on his face like
"now what", She said he was well behaved - no aggression or being naughty.
Which every mom wants to hear; and he didn't try to "herd" anyone.

She did mention that though they try to intermingle them by size, they will
usually intermingle based on level of activity. She said sometimes more gentle
labs are with the smaller dogs. She said they monitor them so that if they seem extra tired, they will put them in a seperate area for some rest, but do
have scheduled rest times from 11 to 2 and from 5 to 7 in the evening; which
during this time they can eat and nap in seperate quarters.

They offer "boarding only" for senior aged dogs who may not do well in
doggy day care situations with lots of play, so if I ever want to board Cody
overnight, it would be the full day care package with sleeping over. It didn't sound like they allow intermingling for pit bulls, chows or Akitas which I was
glad to hear(she said they refer them to other places.

Anyway, When I went to get him, his tongue was hanging out and he was tired which was good, so I may try him for a 1/2 day next week and do that
every other week or so, just to get him used to that and being with other dogs and then an overnight should be okay for him.

She did mention that while outside, there was 1 person for every 15 dogs
which I would have thought maybe 2 people would have been good. What
do you think about that ratio. Collars are always off.

Linda

Sounds like they put a lot of thought into it, which is comforting. And seems like Cody enjoyed himself!! The ratio does seem a little low to me too. But probably nothing is ever going to be *perfect* for us . . . because we're the mommies! If Jackie & Cody were human, they would probably give us the on a regular basis!

(and we would probably deserve it, too)

Linda it sounds like a very well run facility.
Also seems like your doing a great job at searching out the place for you and Cody.
I wish we had more places like that in my area, we have to drive an hour away to find a decent day care / boarding facility.
