if Cody's coat is very heavy I dont think he would need any other. Emma has a heavy coat and seems to enjoy the cold ... Chloe on the other hand doesnt have as thick of undercoat so I think she would need extra protection on really cold days.

A good drying off and the blow dryer after your walks should feel really good to him.

ZERO TO 20 FOR 4 MONTHS! and one more Now tell us again why Wisconsin is THE state for us to move to LOL

Very Funny T-Gal

It is often Zero to Twenty for several days and then we may have a thirty degree temp day and boy, does the weatherman make that sound like a heat wave. - it just fluctuates for the winter season, but we are often very cold - many of us did not move here like me, I was born and raised here.

Many downhill ski, cross country ski, go snowmobiling and ice fish to enjoy the winter, otherwise it makes for a VERY long winter; and When we have bad windchills, it is best to stay indoors -- I don't think I could convince you to move here.

The autumn season is quite beautiful though

A double coated Corgi wont need to wear any clothing - as long as he/she is on the move and not being kenneled or tied up outside when it is 20 below. Corgis love the snow and will want to romp and play in it for lengthy periods of time -ask Jespah - so the cold temperatures and icy ground is no problem. Corgis are much more at home in cool to cold conditions than they are in warm to hot.

If I thought for a minute I could get "foul weather gear" ON Chloe, I would invest in some! Here, where we are in Michigan, the weather is often similar to Linda's in Madison - TOO COLD!! I actually worry more about Chloe's paws, however, when the temperature dives below zero - several times last winter, when it was 20 below, she couldn't take care of her business fast enough and she picked up her paws and limped...we scooped her up and carried her inside! My friend who has a Seeing Eye Dog, puts boots on her dog when the weather is terrible...I don't think boots would work on Corgi's short legs!! ...

I would think a fleece "jacket" would at least break the wind on those subzero wind chill days and would be a good idea. I wonder if there are patterns to make dog coats...It might be worth a look - I'll check in WalMart's fabric department next time I am there! Since I am not a big fan of winter Chloe doesn't spend as much time out in the snow as she would like...Hey!...THANKS for reminding me that winter is right around the corner...we have leaves turning color already!

I wish I lived near Madison, that is the "warmer" area of the state...I am further north.

Michael,

when it is 20 below, I can't imagine anyone leaving their Corgi tied up even with a coat. It is always advised here when the temps get that cold, to bring your dog inside.

I do think Cody will love the snow this winter. However, since your temps are so mild there, Taylor hasn't had to experience the icy ground on his paws. With your average winter temps of 43 for a low and 54 for a high,(I checked it out), I would say you have no idea what it feels like to be in 20 degrees below zero weather for any lenth of time ; and you guys average 2000 hours of Sunshine a year!!!

In that case, Linda, I will DEFINITELY look for a dog coat pattern for Cody!! BBUUURRRRRR! It is coming - my son in Colorado reports that the "divide is covered with snow"...

Boy you guys make me so jealous! (I know you think I'm nuts!) It is so hot here, I'm constantly looking for ways to get exercise without overheating. I just know Oliver and Skippy would love the snow! And I would too, at least for awhile! The one thing I would worry about is their feet - even here you have to worry about fungus infections from the wet and Skippy has very rough pads on his feet. I think the answer might be boots, but then I have seen a product billed as a foot protectant you just rub on their paws.

Sorry, not trying to make you jealous and actually, I would not want to live where it is that warm all the time either. Cody has been loving our cooler temps now - 60 degrees, which makes for great walks and not getting overheated.

I just wish winter only lasted about a month or two at the most. There have been some rare winters where we have not gotten much snow, yet the temps are bitterly cold, so one is stuck inside the house because it is too cold to be outside and there is no snow anyway; but for the most part, we get lots of snow and the first snowfall is always the prettiest and then by March, we are so sick of it, because by that time the temps are getting warmer and the snow just gets so slushy and dirty.

This past year, when we brought Cody home, which was the end of January, there was a lot of snow on the ground; however, that weekend it was in the mid 30's and it rained the entire weekend. Of course, then the temperatures dropped and everything froze and our entire back yard was like an ice skating rink - not good. Cody was so used to going potty on snow, that as it warmed up and the snow melted, he would seek out small patches in the back yard to go pee on.

Last year we had a record of 19 days without seeing the sun - that was depressing

a perfect climate for me would be around 70 degrees, that is just the weather that I prefer. Is there such a place as this? where temps are mostly like this year round.

Well, I too have been thinking about winter coming ( no no nooooooo!!!)
Last year, I did buy Dillon a fleece coat, which he wears, but honestly i think he was happier to play in the snow without it. I also invested in muttluk boots for him. The problem with them is that it is hard for him to walk normally in them. He ends up tripping on his front feet and falling on his face. the back foot boots end up slipping off in the snow becuase of his narrow back feet. Basically while they are designed to protect his feet from salt and ice - he HATES them and it becomes more trouble than it is worth. This winter, i will let him run around naked! he likes it better that way. Last year we got one snow storm that dumped 31 inches of snow on us... Dillon LOVED it- snow is his favorite thing ever- not mine for sure.

Linda, we had a few days last winter that were -7 degrees with a light wind, it was awful for me, but dillon seemed to be completely unphased by that cold snap and he was not wearing a jacket...I am not sure i would have walked him two miles in that cold ( mostly because i am not sure I would make it) but i did walk him 3/4 of a mile in it ( before i lost feeling in my hands and feet and decided that he was done! LOL!!!

If you went out in -7 degrees, then you are more dedicated than I am. I would be inside. It's not the greatest to wear those face masks because they just make you sweat and who wants frozen eyeballs

I am already on the lookout for a Down stadium coat that I am going to buy for this winter that I will wear for my walking days with Cody. I don't think Cody would wear those boots at all and I have seen them in Catalogs.

I remember hearing about the 31" of snow you guys got - snow day for the school kids I am sure.

When we lived in Nebraska, we would get the strangest weather there.

I remember during the winter one year, it had been bitterly cold(we had a lake in our back yard), Anyway, after being in the teens for quite a bit, the lake was obviously frozen. Then one day, it went from 30 degrees to 70 degrees in the middle of February. My husband and son went out ice fishing in shorts and a T-shirt - don't see that very often. (the ice was about a foot thick) so it was still safe to go on. Those temps only lasted for 1 day and then it dropped way back down the next day.

wow, that is crazy weather. I have no human children, only the furry kind, but all the kids had the day off from school that big snow storm. My husband went into work that morning, but decided two hours later to close down his office and come home ( duhh!! LOL).

I had frozen eyeballs, i was miserable that day, and vowed not to do that ever again, and then the next morning, it was 0 degrees and i was out again with DIllon... so much for never again! I just feel bad for him, i dont want him cooped up all day long - he needs fresh air and exercise, so i make it a daily ritual that he gets two walks a day and if it is really bad out we will at least do one walk - but i will walk in the rain, and snow. The only exception was the really hot humid days - this summer we had a couple days where it was 100+ degrees with a heat index of 112 here and 90% humidity...no one could breathe...i let him out for 5 minutes and we were both done. He is much better in cold than hot.

By the way, i love the pics of Cody- there are a few photos that he reminds me of Dillon a lot!

Upstate NY winter: Yup, we have it too. It rarely gets below 0 degrees these days (global warming....). But we have various stages of snow pack, sometimes it warms up and the snow melts, etc.

I will force Tucker (and this year Lulu!) to wear a sweater/jacket only if the wind is really blowing. And as I guess in MI and WI, it's the wind that kills you.

My biggest problem is that it is dark in the morning when I walk the dogs and dark in the evening. I live on a rural road so in the dark, I always have something reflective on Tucker as well as myself. I found a great dog coat that had amazing reflective trim on it at Orvis. It was on sale so I bought it for Tucker. He hates it but on really cold windy nights, I make him wear it.

other wise he has a reflective vest that I make him wear. he looks likle John Belushi dressed in the Killer Bees Suit. OK, yes.... I am that old!!!!!!
