First Vet Visit & cat food -
10-18-2006, 02:42 PM
Well, Huw had his official first vet visit on Monday (his breeder is a vet, and vaccinated him before he came home). We had to go a few days early because Monday morning, the big mean bad cat Myrtle thwaped Huw in the head. He was winking his eye, and I thought I saw a scratch...so there was no waiting. He absolutely loved the vet hospital!!! He really likes the toy they gave him and the treats he got. Dr. Stacey gave him two thumbs up for appearance, health and attitude; said he was one of the sweetest corgis she's ever met. In my eight years in veterinary medicine, it was pretty common for most puppies to be pretty tired after all of the excitement and the vaccine. Not Huw! He was full of it...I swear the shot was pure adrenaline!!! He didn't take one nap from 5:00pm until bedtime at 10:00pm. Dang dog!
Oh, and yesterday we had another fun medical issue. Someone learned where the cats eat...and thought that their food was super yummy. Needless to say, he was bloated all night, nibbled at his dinner, had a hard time pooing until this morning...and then it was go go go. Hopefully dad is keeping a better eye on him today. The cat food is now out of reach, much to the dismay of the two girls. Poor boy dog though...he looked so miserable and his tummy was almost touching the ground. Much better today...silly boy dog.

Hi Monica - isn't it fun bringing home a new pup? All the things you never thought of . . . they will find and get into PRONTO! Sounds like you guys are having a good time. Smart to move the cat food out of reach. No more of that for the little boy!
Glad to hear that everything went well at the vet!!

Monica, was his eye ok in the end? I am assuming it was becuase you didnt say otherwise. He sounds like a joy!
you know i have a similar cat food story for you. I reluctantly was dragged out to dinner...it was the first time we had gone out since we brought him home ( he was about 4 1/2 months old ) and we crated him in his soft crate up in our bedroom, and took down all gates in the downstairs as he was secure upstairs. Well i come home from dinner and there he was, right at the door waiting for me- I was shocked and thought he must have ripped a hole in the screen front of his crate. I ran upstairs, his crate was not damaged at all, he just unzipped it from the inside! smart boy! well the second thing i noticed was the cat bowl- three kibble pieces short of empty -i used to free feed them so there was always at least 2 cups of cat food in the bowl at any time. so this little guy not only ate his dinner right before we went out, but in the two hours we were gone he ate an additional two cups of very fiber rich low fat cat food- i was terribly concerned his belly was hard as a rock and rouuuuuund like a basketball. I nearly rushed him to the emergency vet but my hubby assured me he would be ok, and you know he was fine...and was a lot less interested in the cat food after that incident. ( he pooped about 6 times the next day- more than i though would be possible for this little boy) I learned never to trust the soft crate unless i locked the zipper ( there is a zipper lock , who would have though you needed to actually use it??? ) He now is ungated with cat food down, i am smart enough to take the cat food up when i leave the house, and leave him alone...but while i am here - he wont dare eat that cat food- no matter how yummy it smells ( i have since changed to all canned cat food that smells better to him.)
I am really glad that Huw had such a good experience at the vets - that is good news, and glad he is doing well.
Emilie

Hey Monica,
Thanks for adding Milo to Huw's dogster. I read his profile and it made me so happy with his nickname "Huw Mungus." That is so sweet! I hope your corgi is doing better today. Enjoy and treasure the puppy months because they go by so fast! Your Huw is absolutely adorable!

Mochamix: Miss Gmabler loves cat food, and has since she was a puppy, and every time that I pull out the cat treats, Pounce and such, she's right there begging right along with the cat! We had to begin keeping the cat's food and water bowls in the bathtub because the hoover would suck both dry! Now she just stands up at the bathtub and looks in and whines, especially when the cat is in there eating. You just know that she's saying, "Aw, c'mon, throw me a piece!" And speaking of hoovers, wouldn't it be cute to name a litter of corgi puppies after those (food)sucking cleaners! Hoover, Eureka, Dirt Devil, etc...

feeding the cats in the tub - what a brilliant idea! to let cats in and keep dog out! very smart. Unfortunately with my eldest kitty she cant do the jumping she used to as a youngster, so i have to meal feed her instead of free feed. I will leave food out for her while i am home and have trained Dillon to stay away from their food. The big test came yesterday for me, I had an appt. and ran out of the house fast - i got home almost 3 hours later, and found that i had left the entire plate of canned cat food on the floor in the dining room where i feed the cats, and Dillon did not eat a single bite....the whole thing was still there when i returned! Talk about a big test. I wont tempt fate twice though LOL !

Well, the girls learned real quick where the cat food was. but last night, I found some sort of kibble in the bed. The only animals allowed on the bed are the cats (and my boyfriend, sometimes). So, this kibble looked like dog food, and I questioned Justin...why is there dog food in the bed?!?! He had no idea. Well, this morning, Myrtle (big mean bad cat) threw up on the bed...and it looked like dog food!!! So now we have a cat who eats dog food and a dog who eats cat food!!! Crazy animals!!!

Mochamix: Keep an eye on the dog food. I have read that cat foood for dogs is not as bad as dog food for cats. Something about their urinary tract system.
