Frontline Plus is relatively economical because you give one application every two-three months. I would not want to give an applicvation every month because it would be overdosing, a waste of money and in NZ conditions, not applicable. In NZ, the packaging on Frontline gives you the application details - though I have spoken to a Frontline product distributor and he was even less conservative than the package instructions .

I am the type of person that only takes tylenol when desperate, and it has been a number of years since I have taken any sort of prescribed medication. I take ALL medications in my household very seriously. When I decided to put Miss Gambler on Frontline Plus, I asked about the medication during her physical. I was told to use it monthly. I never take just one person't word on matters(that tyoe of person, as well) so I called Merial Pharm., the maker, and asked questions and voiced my concerns. Here is the breakdwon on Frontline Plus for Dogs 23-44 pounds. It kills fleas FOR UP TO three months, it kills ticks for one month(and in an area with Lyme disease, that's a problem), it kills lice for a month, it helps control mange for a month, and is waterproof for a month. As you can see, to get the full benefits of Frontline Plus, to be covered completely, you have to use monthly. We live in two of the year-round warmest states in the US, California and Nevada, we have cats, and Miss Gambler travels a lot and stays in numerous dog friendly hotels and inns. This choice was not taken lightly, or ignorantly, how could anyone possibly take issue with my logic, or assume that I had not asked about the product or read the label. (This is said with much respect for everyone on this site.)

I agree with Miss Gambler's Mommy - I don't take using Frontline Plus monthly lightly either. Remember I lost my beloved Digger to lymphoma - however, you have to weigh the pros and cons. Now I am not saying that Digger got his lymphoma from Frontline Plus but it does make a person paranoid. Michael you may not have the fleas and ticks in your country that are here in the US. If Chip has a flea on him, he is miserable and will itch until he has a raw spot. Also, a dog can get worms from fleas. Frontline plus did not kill the fleas on Chip for more than one month. I had to use it monthly to get rid of them. Like Miss Gambler, Chip is out and about where he can pick up fleas regularly. My take is each person has to make the educated decision on what is right for their dog. There are too many variables for a generic decision. Not only that - who wants to live with fleas especially if there dog sleeps in their bed.

MissGamblersMommy,
For my curiosity, I am going to bring this up with my vet again the next time I see him. I am assuming based on where we live with our cold climate from November through April, that he feels that the application every 3 months is all that Cody needs; however, during the summer months, he never advised me to apply it monthy(and I want to know why) I can see where you are in a much warmer climate year round, that a monthly application is necessary. |

Tucker: "There ain't no bugs on me" - has always used K9 Advantix (toxic to cats) and I've never seen a flea or tick anywhere near him.
Lulu: "I'm a tick magnet"- started out on 2 months of Frontline (Vet sent me home w/ wrong Med, I asked for K9Advantix (too lazy to go back so I used the 2 month supply) - I found several attached ticks on her. I switched her to k9 Advantix on the 20th of October and after a few days no more attached ticks. After 2 tick bites she was tested for lyme disease and test was negative. I too hate the thought of toxic chemicals going into my dogs' systems but the alternatives (mange/mites/fleas/ticks and lyme disease) are very serious. I could also think of better thngs to do w/ $.

Eri - you are so funny. Yeah, I guess your house does smell like a hospital. You'll end up having to wear a mask and gloves.
I agree that NZ is a very safe country for dogs and there is little reason here to give dogs a product like Frontline any more often than the max timegap. In fact when Taylor next gets his Frontline it will be closer to four months since his previous dosage. |
