Lady has Kidney Disease
I wanted to let everyone know that we took Lady (our corgi mix) to the Vet today and she has kidney disease. She is almost 14 years old and the vet wanted me to administer IV fluids for a week and then 3 times a week thereafter. Lady yipped when she inserted the needle and I just couldn't do it
Her bloodwork isn't real high but she has lost 4 lbs and isn't herself. We are going to put her on a low protein diet and check her bloodwork again in a week. I will not let her suffer.

Thank you - We lost Aladdin our rottie on 2/18/05 - My Digger on 2/18/06 and now Lady is sick. Please pray that we don't lose her on that same day. I need my sanity.

Oh (((Bonnie)))
I'm sorry to hear about your Lady. I hope the diet helps her - I know I couldn't do the IV needle either. I know you have Lady's best interest at heart. I lost my Grandfather, Dad, and brother all on the same date just different years. We always felt it was a sign that they were together and being watched over. Perhaps your Aladdin was sending you the same comforting message - at least that is the way I choose to look at such things.

Bonnie,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Lady. I had dealt with Kidney disease with my cat who passed away in January of 05. I know how difficult it is. Waiting for test results is never easy and can cause lots of anxiety. Bless you Bonnie at this difficult time. |

I will add that the best thing that you can do right now is to be good to yourself, CorgiMom is right, this type of thing causes the stress levels to elevate then the next thing that you know you're sick, and to top it off, it's the holiday season. If it were me, I would just spend this time being as good to myself and to Lady that I could be. Just a lot of special times and special memories, doing all of her favorite things. You will not regret it.

Poor Bonnie - I know that is a tough thing to deal with. My mom had to put one of family dogs - Bandit, a 10 year old border collie - down due to kidney failure, in September.
I hope whatever you do for Lady helps make her feel better. |

Bonnie,
I'm so sorry to hear about Lady. I had a real special foster guy that came in at age 13 in renal failure. With his zest for life and spark plug personality, I just couldn't euthanize him. So he spent his last time with me doing things he loved barking at the Longhorn Cattle and chasing the ball. I enjoyed his company for a year and we didn't do any thing drastic other than put him on K/D (he'd been fed Ol' Roy for most of his life I think). As long as he was comfortable, happy and still enjoyed himself ... Debbie |

oh Bonnie,
I am so sorry to hear about Lady. My sister dealt with CRF for both of her elderly kitties. She was doing every other day and finally every day Sub cutaneous fluids and it was hard at first, she did continue doing it , one of her kitties sadly only made it about 6 months from diagnosis but the other went a year and a half and she was great and had a wonderful quality of life until her last two days when she really went downhill and the decision was made. I know how hard it is and I am sending you and Lady lots of positve thoughts and prayers and big healing hugs too. Emilie |

Emilie,
I know with my cat, I was taking him in twice a week for SubQ fluids; it was not expensive to have the technicians administer it. I give your sister credit for being able to do that. I personally would not have been able to handle it and I give you lots of credit doing what you do for your diabetic cat. At first the SubQ fluids helped, but only for about 6 weeks. From the time he was first diagnosed, he lasted about 10 more months - the vet was surprised as they initially only gave him 3 months. He went through ups and downs, showing improvement for awhile and then turning the other direction. Positive thoughts are with you Bonnie for a good outcome for Lady. |

Lady has lost 4 lbs since the end of May and she only weighed 18 lbs which is a good weight for her. She ate really good last night but she had been given some fluid. The Tech up there let the needle slip out the first time and when they tried to put it back in, she yelped. We are going to feed her the special food for kidneys and do a wait and see. Her one level was above 50 and had been normal in May. The other level was elevated too. I don't know much about it but I know Lady has gone downhill since Digger died. She is turning white. She has had a good life. My son says that she is grieving herself to death - not sure if that is possible or not but she had always been with Digger since we got her.
