Fire ant reaction

Monday morning I got up to Egans snout swelled up twice the normal size.

Hubby always gets up early feeds them breakfast and out for walks.

I quickly gave Egan 25 mg of Benadryl and dressed and headed for the vet.

By the time we got there the swelling had gone down a little bit, and within an hour swelling was gone. We were sent home with instructions to repeat Benadryl at noon and again at at 7pm, hes done wonderful.

Apparently during their walk that morning Egan had got into a fire ant hill, we knew we had a few, but hubby never saw him get into one but they are always surfin for rabbit poop.

Thankfully our fire ants are gone now, just a thought for everyone to make sure to keep Benadryl handy for just these occasions. I am not a vet though so please check with your vet for doseage information.

I am a firm believer that everyone should stock the basic emergency supplies, doggie aspirin, some bandages, and Benadryl(and you're right, always get the dosage from the vet, but time can be critical with reactions sometimes so if you can start with that before you get to the vet, the problem may not get worse.)

Also, a bar of soap should be in the kit. If you ever cut too far on their nails and it starts to bleed, sticking the claw into a bar of soap witll stop it.

Glad to hear Egan is doing fine! Must have been very scary for you both.
Did the Vet say whether 25 mg is the dose we should give a corgi or does it depend on their weight?

MGM I hadn't heard of soap to stop the nail bleeding but had heard of putting their paw in flour. Also by doggy aspirin do you mean low dose people aspirin? Emma was taking 2 low dose coated aspirin each day while battling heartworms - that was what our Vet told me to use. Just wondering if there is one specifically made for dogs?

My vet has always told me to give my dogs Bayer's Children asprin. I haven't used any other asprin but this.

tandemgal: there are aspirins for dogs, don't use human aspirin, they are easy to find at Petco and such, but remember, just one will kill a cat.

Should I not use the Bayer's children? I didn't realize they had asprin for dogs. I will definitely look for some. Thanks!

Thanks MGM - I'll look for the dog aspirin next time I'm out.

I did not know aspirin would kill my cat or tylenol would kill my Girls!!!

thank you so much - it may have been posted somewhere else here by someone but if so must have gone right over my head!

Buy doggie aspirin, easy to find, decent sized bottle, decent price. I would never give human aspirin to a dog, but with Zia being a puppy, it may be that the doggie aspirin is not for puppies. I just checked Miss Gambler's bottle and it says not for use under six months. It's Nutri-Vet K-9 Aspirin for small dogs, and it's 120mg buffered aspirin. It's also chewable(liver flavored), and it works. Miss Gambler had trauma to her ears(those Dumbo ears slapping together) and she was in pain for a few days. (We had to train her to not slap her ears together all the time!)

I haven't had to give anything to Zia, yet. Zip got hit by a car 5 years ago and when it gets cold, his leg bothers him. The vet said to give the Bayer's when his leg bothered him or if their shots bothered them. We don't have any pet supply places around here. I have to drive an hour and a half to get to a PetSmart. But will definitely look for some doggie aspirin. Thanks for your help.

Now my vet said that I can give a baby aspirin to Cody if needed for pain. We used it this summer when my husband accidentally stepped on Cody's foot when Cody veered in front of him while out for a walk and then he limped for the rest of the evening. -I think they are 80mg? - However, check with your own vet to see if they would advise this if needed for your pet.

That goes for ALL medicine, always check. And I have been thinking, I don't have kids, so I am only guessing, but isn't that Bayer's children's a buffered aspirin, because it's for kids? If so, then that is probably why the vet suggested it, it's milder and easier on their system. The doggie asprin that I mentioned is also buffered, but the dosage is higher. Again, you are soooo correct, always ask. (And ask more than one person, that's my motto!)

Cindy, I had mentioned this once before, but my last Pem, Betsy had gotten stung by a bee or bitten by some type of spider and her snout had also swelled up to twice the size. My vet is within a miles distance and I got there quickly where they were able to give her a shot. They had informed me there that I could give a Benedryl if that were to happen again; and it was up to 3X a day if needed. The dosage(mg given) is based upon your pets weight; so important to discuss this beforehand with your vet.

It is a scary thing to have happen.

CorgiMom: I sent a private message to ZDog and told her to make sure to ask the vet before switching and using. I didn't mean to come across as someone who knows more than their vet, sorry. (But the doggie aspirin REALLY works.)

No, I believe you. When I say to ask a vet for advice - that is "My disclaimer" because I am not a vet and I do not want people popping pills in their dogs mouth based on what I say. I am sure you have done your research and know that the doggie aspirin works.

I just thought I would throw in what my vet had also said; with my disclaimer.
