Pigment on nose

Abby has a small pink pigmented area on her nose - see photo - I am worried that our extreme aussie sun will cause this to become cancerous later in life. Any suggestions as to what I should put on it when we go for our walks?... Or am I being over cautious. Thanks Kath

Kat,

Good question - my Emma has a little pink in her fur line on the bridge of her nose. I never though about skin cancer though. I will be interested to hear if anyone knows of a great risk for skin cancer for dogs with the lighter pigmentation.

a pinky on the nose is a curse for those who show their Corgis in Conformation events. Handlers hide the pink pigmentation with a blackening powder. Other pink colourations on the muzzle region are also dealt with using other powders.
But if you take your Corgi out in the sun and he/she has a pink area on the nose, then you should apply a sun block to the pink area. If you are an Australian, take note of how the Aussie cricketers protect their noses when out playing in the sun. Same for Corgis. Your vet or pet shop should stock suitable and effective sun block creams for dogs.

Thank you Michael. I was a bit hesitant re using a human sun block - I shall make enquiries re a doggie one. Kath.

My corgi had that pink pigment and my vet advised me to use regular sunblock. Of course, my Corgi always tried to lick it off right away. She lived
to be 13 1/2 and never got cancer because of that.

I still wouldn't advise anyone to apply human sun blocks in preference to a special dog variety because of the lickety, lickety situation.

I purchased the Doggie Sunblock, it is very easy to apply, not greasy or oily and stays on the spot very well. It has the added advantage of being an antibacterial, antiseptic and wound protectant cream as well as the sun filter. AND you can use it on your Dogs, Cats, Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Goats !!!
This particular one is made in New Zealand.
