HELP!!! Chloe has Bronchitis/Pneumonia!!!!!

From a good majority of your posts in the past regarding cats, I would say you are not in the least bit fond of them and wouldn't mind seeing them eliminated for good.

I was reading Dr Foster and Smith's new catalog yesterday and they are now referring to kennel cough as one form of bronchitis. They also said that if you take your dog to dog shows or obedience classes, they should have the kennel cough immunization. I thought that was interesting. My vet automatically gave Chip his and I am glad.

I saw my vet this week, and he told me that his clients that are really into showing their dogs and attend lots of shows get the bordatella vaccination(I know there are different strains) as often as every 6 months. He told me the protection starts to wear off about 9 months after the vaccination is given; and he said that it takes about 7 - 10 days for the vaccination to be effective once given. I know that no boarding place in our town will take a dog if they have not been vaccinated against this.

Thanks Linda - Chip is about due then. I will follow up with the Vet and see what she recommends given that Chip will start obedience classes the first week in February.

ETA: About bordetella - most vets recommend the shots every 6 months, especially if your dog is frequently around other dogs. Because mine go to camp and the dog park, they get one every 6 months.
At PetsMart's daycare/camp/boarding, your dog must have had a bordetella shot no less than 6 months prior.

I am very disappointed as I just got notice late last night that Cody's daycare/boarding facility which he loved going to has closed - no prior notice, just an email to all their clients saying "we are closed" So I am on the search for a new boarding place for him becaue I know I will need one. Didn't want to change the topic, as this is about vaccinations, but you mentioned yours, so I will turn it back to the topic it was meant to be.

Hope you will be feeling better soon Chloe - please let us know what happens.

Pardon me, I'm still chuckling about " Michael the cat hater"..... Michael: you are very active in NZ w/ your Corgi group, do they shell out the abuse like we do on this list?

I love cats, but Lulu has enough cat tendencies to keep me satisfied.

Anywho... so sorry about Chloe and the bronchitis/pneumonia. My first reaction after reading the post was: if either Tuck and Lulu are diagnosed w/ Kennel Cough (they have been vaccinated annually/not every 6 months????/I plan to have a chat w/ my Vet about that when Tuck gets his 2 year check up) I will insist on a chest x-ray. $$$$$$$$$

Seeing that I am a relatively inexperienced Corgi Mom, I tend to panic first and think later. Please keep us posted on her progress.

Susan - The short answer is no. But the WWCW Club is not about giving advice unless it is asked for. I have never heard mention of cats once by any member.

Linda - you are sometimes as exasperating as are cats. It is great that you have Cody because he could wean you away from the dreaded disease called catinfluencepidemic

There are dust mites and bed bugs(especially) galore in most houses but when it is necessary, at least a great many of them can be eliminated out of the equation.

I got in touch with a vet today on behalf of Chloe. She was not very illuminating, so I will try another. But here are some of her comments:

Bronchitis is a bit like ashma - it can be managed. If it remains an allergic problem then it won't turn into pneumonia but if it becomes bacterial, it could do so. There are a number of drugs that might help and there is a need to try them out to see which one/s will work best for Chloe. Tobacco smoke and aerosol sprays are a curse for any dog with bronchitis or ashma.

I think there are several of us that have the wonderful catinfluencepidemic, and I guess that is one thing I enjoy having - Cody has some cat tendencies, so I can't see him weaning me away from them anytime soon

Susan, reality check. Even IF Tuck and Lulu receive their bordatella vaccines and a month later are boarded, they can still come down with kennel cough. The reason being there are a wide variety of strains of it and the vaccine only covers some of them. IF there are no physical medical reasons for a chest x-ray, why do one?

Mine are at day care 2 days or having over nights w/ the sitter if I am travelling.

Has your vet eliminated Heart disease as the cause of Chloe's coughing and wheezing? Another vet I contacted said that it appears your vet is doing everything to order but that bronchial coughing and wheezing is often the symptoms for heart disease.
