first heat??? - 03-03-2007, 07:45 AM

I have two female pups that are both 7 months old. Just curious as to when to expect their first heat. And yes I have read all the books, but just want to know what ya'll think and have experienced. Thanks!

It's been a long time since I've had a female dog, but I would say just about anytime between 6-9 months. That's what I've always been told. I usually had my females fixed by the time they were 6 months old, so I'm not sure.

Any time after the age of 6 mos. Mine have averaged around 8 mos. of age.

If you're going to spay them now is the time, before they come in season.

IF they come in, then be prepared for mood swings. They sometimes act skittish and are easily spooked, upset tummies and just generally act as if they don't feel good. (Yes, they PMS too.) While they may get along fabulously now, don't take for granted they will while they are season, there may be fights and they might not get along as well afterwards. These are things some of my girls have done as well as others belonging to people I know.

Thanks Debbie, I've always wondered about that.
