adoption advice for second rescued corgi

I have a 12 year old (rescued) female corgi and am now thinking of adopting a second rescued corgi. Since the first one is female, and no she is NOT alpha, what is the opinion of whether I should be open to a male or get another female. Are the male corgi's really as mello as they say? Input please. I appreciate all the advice I can receive. ~Shelly

My rule of thumb would be to go with a male, not necessarily because or that they are mello - tell that to my 12 year old boy <LOL>, but because the male/female pairings usually tend to have less problems. Even though your girl does not appear to you to be alpha, more likely than not, she will be the alpha over a male. A TRUE alpha is not a fighter or scrapper - they just rule. They do it with looks, or glances, sometimes a curled lip at most. They don't start fights, but will settle them.

Having said that, much is going to depend on your current corgi and how she gets along with other females. The other part of the equation, if you decide to go with another female, is what the rescue is like and how they do with with other females. A conscientious rescue will do their best to match the right rescue, male or female, to your home.

Thanks for your advice Debbie. Reba gets along well with other dogs, especially corgis, in fact we're petsitting another 12 year old rescued female corgi for 10 days at our house while the family is on vacation. The dogs are friends. The only male corgi she's been with (in the 4 years I've had her) was a puppy less than a year old, and she was fine with him, but then that's a puppy. I'll see what dogs become available at rescue (male or female) and how the personality match works out. I'm open.
