Royal Canin Food recall

The following foods have now been recalled:

Royal Canin Dog Food Recall News Alert (A+ Flint River Ranch)

Thankfully, the food we feed, Royal Canin Medium Adult, is NOT part of the recall. However, our prayers go out to all those pets and pet families who have been affected by all of these recalls. It is quite a serious business...

It is getting pretty damn serious with all this contaminated dog and cat food. There seems to be a link with this Royal Canin sold in parts of Africa and the immediate previous occurrences I heard about. I'm sure with the big name food companies, there will be greater attention paid in future, but what about the dog food producers who have much less bells and whistles and offer less care and attention. Nothing so far has trickled into New Zealand or Australia, thank goodness.

China is only part of the problem - the other parts are alternative sourcing of the products to be used, insisting on proven suppliers and in testing all products to ensure that they will not cause any harm.
Less than two weeks ago, a Codlin Moth was found in one apple out of case of New Zealand produced apples in Taiwan ( coincidently enough Taiwan can be regarded as part of China). Now this one apple was traced back to a supplier in the Hawkes Bay region. These moths are not harmful to humans or animals. But the entire supplies of apples to Taiwan from NZ have been suspended. All the current shipment has gone back - even though the moth is only in a single apple - and supplies of apples from NZ to Taiwan won't be resumed until much later in the year when Taiwanese authorities are satisfied with procedures. Our apple exporting to Taiwan is worth millions and millions of dollars annually. That's how careful you must be to produce quality food items and to what lengths the Chinese take to ensure standards are maintained. The boot must also go on the other foot.

Well, I was feeling pretty safe with the dog food I was giving my dogs until they mentioned the recall on some of the food that contained rice. So, the first thing I did was called the home office of Lassie's Nature's Way and asked them about their rice supply. They told me that their supplier was in the United States and wasn't involved in the recall: Sure made me feel much better on deciding on that brand.

One of the icons of New Zealand is a food producer called Watties. If you buy Watties you can be assured that the contents are NZ. That was until the last say five years. It is odds on that all or part of the contents of a large range of Watties products now come from overseas - particularly China. So peoiple who support Watties producrs because they are good ol Kiwi, are in for a surprise if they haven't already clicked on. Not that there is anything wrong with Chinese produced food items - they simply are not local anymore. Flobal Warming is going to take care of sourcing a great many food items - will USA be a rice growing nation or anywhere near the current level, in the near to medium term future?

"Flobal" warming doesn't have much to do with outsourcing - think bottom line and profit margins.
