Eye surgery for Rosie. - 06-11-2007, 02:58 PM

Rosie had surgery yesterday on a non-healing eye ulcer. She spent the day at the vets and was a very unhappy girl when she returned. She has to wear an Elizabethen collar for the next few days to stop her from rubbing at the stitched eye with her paw.

Later on, when I have a bit more time, I'll write up a short article on the eye surgery, as it is apparently fairly common for corgi's eye to develop non-healing eye ulcers.

Poor Rosie. Give her my love. Hope it all goes well. What were the symptoms - were they obvious.

Thanks for asking, Michael.
She is feeling a lot better today and is back to her perky, cheeky self.

The symptoms were that her eye became a little more wet than normal, but nothing to cause alarm. Then she began rubbing at the eye with her paw and the tissue beneath her eyelids looked a little red. Got some Tricin (antibiotic ointment) from the vet to apply 3 - 4 times a day. At that stage, there was no evidence of an ulcer. Initially, it cleared up and she stopped rubbing and the whites were nice and white again. But about a week later, same thing. I shot her back to the vet quick as, because she has had this before in the other eye, so I was alert to the possibility of it being non-healing a lot earlier. Because it was picked up quickly, she could be operated on by our vet instead of having to go to the opthalmologist.

Glad Rosie is recovering so well. It is good that you knew the signs because anyone less experienced would have let it go for a quite a long time. Looking forward to meeting/ seeing Rosie on the WWCWC's walk in July.

Samson and Michael: thanks! Yes - she is cute, even when she's crook.

Experience is a great teacher. Last time, we let it go for too long, attempting to heal it with a series of different antibiotic ointments. Even the vet didn't fully recognise what was happening. I don't blame him, though, as they have to be masters of all animals and all breeds. And this does seem to be more of a problem for certain breeds of dogs.
But as soon as the veterinary opthalmologist saw her walk in the door, he said "I know exactly what is wrong here, even without examining her." which I initially thought was a wee bit of a stretch.
But he was dead right! Aaaand a LOT more expensive than the vet. Who seems to have learnt a lot in the meantime about the condition. Admittedly, the job was more difficult to deal with than it might have been had it been recognised earlier, but she recovered fully with no scarring etc.

Now the nervous bit is waiting the ten days until the buttons come off!

We had a simular issue with one of our cats.

Just before leaving on a 10 Day Vacation Dusty started to have issue with her eyes ulcerating.

To make a long story short she spent the our entire vacation at the vets being brought to specialist in NE Mass and SE NH.

The issue was extra tissue around the eyes that needed to be removed.

Shocking to see at first, as in the case of Rosie, but she came out of it fine.

Poor Rosie- Three years Sooty had the exact same operation twice on same eye within six months of each other- the first time he had a contact lens to wear- honestly! the second time- he had his eye stitched like Rosie- now as soon as he gets an eye infection we are down in the vet pronto.Luckily we were covered for the op by his pet insurance- cost over 700 pounds/1350 dollars altogether

Kisses to Rosie from Sooty and Cindy

I had a leading show Corgi (Ricky) who got one of his beautiful eye's seriously pierced by the claw of a cat and I rushed him to Australian vet Bruce Robertson (who with his wife, Robin, had and still has champion Corgis and are leading breeders and judges). Bruce did a wonderful job and saved my Corgi's eye but a little scar remained. So I boiled fresh Rosemary and dabbed the cooled liquid around Ricky's eye and the scar quite quickly disappeared.

My Biscuit had the same thing as Rosie this year! It was so scary as it grew very very quickly in tow short weeks.I took him to several different vets and nothing was shrinking the ulcer...then I found out about a Dr.Tony Bascher who is one of the only board- certified canine opthamologists in the U.S. apparently and is here in San Diego at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital near La Jolla.He put him on Neo Poly Gram Ophth drops and an Ophthamic ointment combination and with frequent checkups and wearing a "cone collar"for 4 weeks 24/7 (which was so sad because it bumped on the ground and tripped him up when he walked due to his short legs!)and it cleared right up!Dr.Basher is from the UK and very familiar with corgis...he said it is very common to the breed.Hope Rosie feels better soon..what a cutie (-;

Gee, up til now a Corgi with an ulcerated eye never crossed my mind. And siuddenly it turns out to be a common Corgi problem. Rosie what have you done?
