Ears and neutering.. - 07-09-2007, 07:16 PM

I'm back with a few more questions. I want to get Rocko neutered and was wondering what the appropriate age is. Maybe the vet could be of more assistance, but was just wanting an approximate age. I guess the reason I may feel more comfortable asking on here is because the vet I go to isn't really familiar with Pems, and seeing as I live in a hick town south of Indianapolis and the vet I go to is in Bean Blossom I really have no alternative.

Also, are there signs of when the ears will stand? His ears seem to be protruding more from the sides, and when he lays on his back they stand and I know what he will look like when they do. I know he's only 9 weeks and I probably still have a while but I'm getting very excited.

Thanks!!
Linda

I have never had any of my Corgis 'fixed' but a Corgi is no different from any other breed of dog as fas as neutering goes. After he has turned six months seems to be ok.
Rocko's ears should be erect by the time he is 12 weeks old. If not wait a couple of weeks and if still floppy then you will probably have to tape - which is a special managed process in trying to get Rocko to fully utilise those wonderful ears.

Six months is a good time for the neutering.

It sounds like his ears are working on coming up, just be patient. A few more weeks and you might want to look into taping.

Don't worry about your vet not being real familiar with Pems. Corgis (both breeds) have more in common with dogs in general than differences as corgis. Meaning they are dogs too!

I agree with Debbie, sounds like they're working on it. So give them a bit longer. If my puppies ears aren't standing, I do tape them. Sometime between 10 and 12 weeks so you've got a little more time before you need to worry.

Peggy

We just had Colby neutered at 7 1/2 months as mommy wasnt very on the ball ....no seriously, it is because we were having vet issues...but now we found a WONDERFUL vet!! So patient and kind and explains everything and really loving of all animals...shes just great!!! I dont think Colby is as happy about losing his "Nuhn Nahs" but we had a contract with the breeder and hes not for show/breeding anyhow...so its all good!

We got him at 12 weeks and his ears were already up also...just to answer that part of your post too....

have a great day

julie & colby

There really is a town called Bean Blossom. Apparently it was in the 60's or 70's there was a Grateful Dead concert and some of the people didn't want to follow them anymore so they settled there and called it Bean Blossom. That's the story I heard. If it's true or not, I don't know. The vet there is an old man who does it for the love of animals. He gets up every morning at 330 to go to the local farms to check out their animals and he also makes house calls for people who live around there. He doesn't open till 1 pm, and it's first come first serve. He doesn't want anyone to not take their pets to the vet because of financial issues, so he doesn't charge much. I knew someone who took their dog there who needed his leg amputated and he did that, kept him for 2 days, sent him home with antibiotics and all his follow up visits and they only paid $125. He's very good at what he does.

Don't some places have funny names. At least the funny name places are not usually duplicated. I live in a small city called Upper Hutt. No other place in the world called this. Name is associated with a major river and domestic water supply source called Hutt River which in turn happens to be named after a middle ranking British guy who I don't think ever visited New Zealand. The main city in my region is Wellington - whose boundary is just a 15 minute drive away - and I believe there are 27 other Wellingtons in the world.
Hey,some people in NZ think we should change the name of our currency from the dollar to the zeal ( fits in with the nation's name New Zealand). What do you think of zeal?

Zeal...hmmm...could be worse, I guess. But there's been one change of currency name in my lifetime, and that's enough for me.

But Clogs, we went from British pounds to American dollars.
