Question about puppy sebaceous cyst? - 07-18-2007, 01:50 PM

HI you all, Rosie is now 3 months and a few weeks--all around a pretty great dog. Question: she does not have fleas but has seemed to develop a cyst in the area under her left eye, between the cheek and muzzle area. It is moveable and feels round and detached under her skin.

I have a vet appointment on Monday the 22nd for another booster and rabies shot, so it is not too long from now to have it checked out, just wondering if any body has encountered this with their corgis and what you did about it. It is about the size of a slightly large pea.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, worried Mom, Jane

Puppy cyst? - 07-18-2007, 04:50 PM

Hi again, I took Rosie to the vet this afternoon and he was somewhat mystified as to what it is. He believes he found another one on the other side but I did not feel it, so I am not sure.

At any rate he thinks it is a lymphatic cyst, but is going to do some research to see if he can settle on a more definitive answer. We are thinking that maybe when she is spayed in a few more weeks that he will either excise it (them) or at the very least take a biopsy of it.

So, if any of you have experienced this with your corgis, please let me know. Thanks, Jane and Rosie

Rosie could very well have viral papillomas which are a kind of wart and usually are found on a dog around the lips and muzzle and near or under the eye/s. They are non-malignant can be channelled to other dogs but not contagious from dogs to humans. Usually they just disappear again after several days or so. They can be treated by treating the dog with antibiotics.

Yes and no. I've had several dogs with various types of cysts, but none in the area you mention.

You're thread is entitled sebaceous cyst, and a sebaceous cyst usually has a cheesy like substance in it that you can squeeze out. They can be removed surgically but usually come back. I've had dogs with these but never on the face. What you're describing doesn't sound like a sebaceous cyst.

Well actually I took Rosie, as I said to the vet and he doesn't really know what they are (she does have them on both sides of her face in the same place) and is going to do research. I did research myself and came up with all sorts of horror stories about what it could be--mast cancer--so I am just going to watch it, wait until the vet decides, perhaps get a second opinion, have it biopsied, pray and hope for the best. She is a beautiful, active puppy with no signs of distress except for these two small lima bean bumps--I will post the picture I took of her showing the lumps.

Thanks for your thoughts, and prayers. We'll keep you posted. I also wrote the breeder to see if they know anything about this in her family tree, haven't heard back yet. Jane

A quick update--my vet talked to a "pediatric vet" and she told him that Rosie's lumps are lympatic tissue having to do with her teething. Apparently when all her big teeth come in the lumps will slowly go away. So, nothing to worry about--she got spayed yesterday and he took a good look when she was under--and is not concerned. Happy day to you all, Jane and Rosie

Like the kind of lump I 'spoked' about, this is very good news. Goodby lumps, hello teeth.
