Linda,

Something like this, you need to call a vet; not post to a message board. It could be some time before anyone sees it and can provide an answer. Ipecac syrup would work, but unless you have some on hand, I'm not sure how easily you can obtain it.

Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to induce vomiting, a fresh bottle is better. Start with about 1/4 cup (or less); if you give 1/2 cup or more, stop and then get to the vet. Never induce vomiting with caustic substances such as lye or cleaning products.

Like Debbie says, call a vet. In New Zealand you can phone a vet or speak to his/her nurse/receptionist (who have some veterinary qualifications anyway) and get free advice for a host of questions.
I would say that no action need be taken for a pup consuming the end bit of a cigarette but to be on the safe side, the Glencorgi treatment might do the job. I know that cigs contain two hundred poisons but the real adversity with them is in the smoking down through the lungs rather than in swallowing a small section of the dreaded thing.

Contacted a local vet and she says that dogs (pups especially) eating/swallowing 'dead' cigarette butts from picking up the odd one in the streets, must be a fairly regular occurance and not to worry about it. The cigs will work through their system and no harm will have occurred.

Just to make it clear, there was no way I could get ahold of a vet at the time it occurred. If I call the emergency vet, they say they can't give advice over the phone and to bring them in. I was researching it on the internet and some people were saying it could kill him if I didn't get it removed and then there were those that said ipicac syrup is deadly if given and then there were those who said it would be OK. I was just looking for more advice, thinking maybe somone had been through it before. On a good note, he did pass it today, fully intact. I've never been so excited about Rocko pooping LOL

I can remember years ago when people would give their dog tobacco to kill the worms. Glad to hear your pup is ok.

Linda,
My wife and I live in Brooklyn and my corgi Nick eats almost everything off the sidewalk. Cigarettes included. Our vet told us that although we should not let cigarette butt eating become a habit. An occassional cigarette is OK.

This is a very good thread. We have now learn all about cigarette-eating dogs and the resultant lack of carnage. What a relief. It is interesting that tobacco can kill worms - that would be from a few of those 200-odd poisons associated with cigarettes.

Not necessarily. Garlic also kills worms. Ask my sheep.

Thanks everyone for the info. Now I won't be so worried if it happens again. I have pulled so many of them out of his mouth and I just didn't get to that one in time. The neighbor just throws them wherever not realizing we share a front and back yard.
