beginning glaucoma - 10-08-2007, 10:02 AM

I saw Duchess rubbing her eye on the carpet this morning and then saw her red eye lining. A quick trip to the vet established she has higher pressure in the eye than normal.

Now we have a referral to an eye specialist. Luckily we got an emergency appointment for Tuesday early morning.

The first vet gave me two prescriptions for rather expensive medications. I didn't get them filled since I was given some drops to put in her eye already.
I don't think waiting until I see the specialist is a bad idea. What is your opinion?

Just looked up Glaucoma on the net and it doesn't look good. Kind of scary.

Since you have the appointment already set up with the eye specialist and it is tomorrow morning, plus you already have drops; I don't think waiting until after you see him/her is a bad idea. The specialist may prescribe something different or even the same thing, so either way you'll be ready.

We'll be thinking of both Duchess and you.

Thank you Debbie, I was getting nervous about waiting. I feel much better having your opinion.

Jane

It does sound scary, keep us posted and we wish you and Duchess the best of luck tomorrow.

I hope it is just a kind of conjunctivitis.

Good news! No glaucoma. The specialist said Duchess might have hit her eye against something.
Glad to get the news but too bad it was so expensive. Between both vets it was $300.
I was impressed by the hospital in North Andover Mass. It is a 24 hour animal hospital. With specialist treating even exotic pets. If anyone needs their services they are at 247 Chickering St, N. Andover. ( directly accross the street from the 99 restaurant.)

Ouch on the pocketbook, but a big sigh of relief on the good news. Also isn't it reassuring to have found a good veterinary resource?

Very happy for this outcome Jane.

It is good to know where to find emergency help and specialist too. The regular charge for an appointment is $150, so I am sticking with my current vet for regular ailments.
There are different parts to this hospital. Maybe they don't charge that much other than for the specialist. But yes, I am happy to have a back up vet.

Great news. How expensive ($300) for just two vet consultations. In 4.5 years with Taylor, I have not spent $200 on vet fees. Give Duchess a kiss for me.

When the vet examined Duchess's eye they put drops in to dialate the pupil. Both vets did this. But the pupil has not returned to looking like the other eye. I called the office of the specialist and they wanted me to bring Duchess in. Called the original vet and they said if I could wait for morning and see how she was they could look at it after they recieved the report from the specialist. Had to call the spec. back to give them the fax #.
Has anyone had a problem like this, were the eye stayed dialated?

My Dog's have not experienced the issue. But when I was younger, I had en experience simular. It took two days for my pupil to go back to working normal. They had dialated my eyes three days in a row for testing. The eye doctor told me to use the saline and rinse my eye. This helped and by the next morning it was OK. I am not sure if you can use saline on dogs, but the vet is the best choice to help you with this.

Vet called and said some dogs are more sensitive to the drug to dilate pupils. Duchess must be one. She had more than one dose in two days. It can take up to five days to go back to normal. It does seem a bit better today.
