Picking at Paws - 10-17-2007, 11:34 AM

My corgi, Lil' Pete, has red raw paws and he constantly picks at them and licks them. We have been to the vet many times, tried soaking his paws in epsom salts. Am currently attempting aloe, we've also tried oral antihistamines and antibiotics.
We spend the winter in FL Keys, and thought he was allergic to coral dust, but find he has the same condition up north.
We would appreciate any help.
Thanks

What food is he on? Might be a food allergy as that is an issue with one of the boys here.

Another idea is the types of cleaners you use. One of my girls will started the same thing when I changed to a different carpet cleaning solution and also when I tried to use a different laundry soap.

Like any person, make a list of the things the dog eats or comes in contact with. Then make a note of things that might have changed in the last 6 mos or so. Even if you are using a new air freshner, make a note of that. Then start eliminating things-might take a few days to notice a change though.

Good luck!

Do you use any carpet freshners on your carpet? I had a dog that would just about chew her feet raw, before I realize that it was the sprinkle carpet freshner I was using. After I quit using the freshner, not more problem.

Take Pete to a beach and let him paddle in the sea water for as long as possible - or if he is reluctant, walk him along the water line yourself for a good length of time. Sea (salt) water is a great healer for affected feet caused by an allergic etc reaction.
