Signs of kidney disease - 11-06-2007, 08:43 PM

Menu Foods in the USA recalled 60 million cans and bags of dry food in March, 2007 because of the danger, and the actual result, of wrecking dogs' kidneys.

A dog's kidneys can be damaged by:
eating contaminated food
other toxins
systemic/inflammatory infections
cancer in the body

Signs of kidney disease:
increased drinking and urinating
weight loss
decreased apetite
vomiting
constipation
lethargy and weakness

Duncan has a several of those symptoms around the time of the food recall, but I knew he didn't have any recalled food. I was worried about some of his biscuits though. It turned out, that he had a bacterial virus which took about 3 weeks of antibiotics to clear up. Like Michael has said in the past, watch you dog closely, and really note any unusual changes in their eating and drinking habits.

Lady had those symptoms before the recall. She was not eating much, losing weight and vomiting small amounts of bile. We took her to the vet's and they confirmed she had kidney failure. I was feeding her a variety of canned and dry dog food. When we got Chip I fed him canned and dry Pro Plan puppy food and then to Natures Recipe canned and dry and Lady started eating that then along came Dale who would not touch the stuff so I switched again to Eagle Pack Holistic and lady gained weight, stopped the green bile stuff and is doing very well for a 15 year old girl. I think the canned dog food was tainted for months prior to the recall and that was her problem.
