red eyes - 11-09-2007, 06:35 PM

I noticed every morning Peanut wakes up and his eyes (the scleras) are white as paper. But once he starts playing fetch you can see a good amount of redness in his eyes. I was wondering if this is common? Perhaps from all the running back and forth? From the air drying out his eyes? Sleepy? Or something more serious?

Sounds like maybe an allergy. It happens every day - clear in the morning and red later? Do they clear up after playtime?

Red eyes are usually caused by either an allergy or an infection. If they are clearing up every day to white - and not watering or running discharge, and he's not pawing at them like they're irritated, my guess would be an allergy. I'd probably call into your vet to see if you should be concerned. Maybe they can suggest an eyedrop...or if it's an allergy your vet might ok Benadryl.

Charlie's eyes are always bright white...but I did ask my vet about the skin on his belly turning hot pink after playing. He said probably a mild grass allergy and wasn't too concerned.

Thanks for the advice

Yes they are white in the morning, and semi red during Peanuts 1 and 2nd round of fetch. On the last round of fetch, and before he sleeps, his eyes are noticeably red.

I'll ask the vet for confirmation too.

Thanks again

Chip & Dale were waking up in the morning and sometimes during the day with mucus in their eyes - not everyday just sometimes so the Vet gave me a little bottle of eyedrops and now no more problems. She said that it was probably caused from all the dust and stuff flying around since we are in a drought here.
